"The only thing I want to say is, I know I'm not Einstein, but I'm not the queen of the imbeciles either. It has been extraordinary, wonderful, I've been three feet off the ground since I made that first record. I don't know why they hate me."

Biography Vanessa Paradis Biography

Vanessa Chantal Paradis is a French singer and actress. An enormously successful French singer-actress-model, Vanessa Paradis is perhaps best known for her hit single "Joe le Taxi" (1987), her stunning film debut in "Noce Blanche" (1990) and her controversial ads for Coco perfume (1991). Paradis launched her career as a pop singer with her first album "M & J" when she was just 16, following that up with the equally popular recording "Variations sur le meme t'aime" in 1990.

Capitalizing on her popularity as a singer, the blonde beauty decided to take a crack at movie acting, accepting the pivotal role of a young woman whose teacher rejects her after a passionate love affair in "Noce Blanche". For her debut performance as a Lolita-like nymph Paradis was awarded the Cesar for Most Promising Newcomer-Female. Her gorgeous face and screen presence did not escape the notice of marketing executives at Chanel who quickly signed her to star in their new campaign for Coco perfume (1991). Critics balked at the ads which featured the glamorous Paradis dressed as a bird and swinging from a trapeze in a gilded cage while a fluffy, white cat looked on.

Vanessa Paradis was discovered on the TV show L'École des fans in 1980. She recorded her first single La Magie des surprises-parties in 1985. Although it was not a hit, it paved the way for the song with which she would become internationally famous - "Joe le taxi" in 1987, while she was still only 14 years old. It was #1 in France for 11 weeks and, unusually for a song sung in French, was released in the United Kingdom the following year, where it reached #3. It was taken from her first album M&J (it stands for Marilyn & John) which, although it gained a number 13 placing in France, drew little attention in the UK and did not chart.

In 1992, now 19 and working in the United States with rock musician Lenny Kravitz, who was her boyfriend for a while, Paradis began work on a new album sung in English, in which she had become fluent. Written and produced by Kravitz, the album, titled Vanessa Paradis, topped the French chart and briefly made the UK listings (number 45). One of the singles from it was Be My Baby, which made number 5 in France and gave her another Top 10 UK hit (number 6). She has since appeared in several films, most famously "Noce Blanche", for which she won the 1990 César Award for Most Promising Actress; 1999's La fille sur le pont (aka Girl on the Bridge), which became an arthouse box office hit in the United States; and 2004's Mon Ange. In addition to juggling her modeling responsibilities, Paradis also found time to record her third album, the self-titled "Vanessa Paradis" (1992), which had more of a 1970s pop and disco sound then her earlier, more contemporary works and featured tracks on which she collaborated with American rock star Lenny Kravitz.

In 1991, Paradis promoted a fragrance for Chanel, entitled Coco. In the advertisement, she is dressed in all black and feathers, portraying a bird swinging in a cage. In 2004 she promoted Chanel's new handbags called Ligne Cambon. In 2006 she modeled for Chanel again for The New Mademoiselle handbag. On the musical side, she is included in the French children's album and concert "Le Soldat Rose". Paradis currently released a new album (Divinidylle). There are three versions (regular, limited edition which includes 2 songs that weren't released on the regular version and the Christmas edition which will be released later this year and will include another rare song titled "Abracadabra").

She started the Divinidylle tour in October. Some concerts will be filmed for the future release of a DVD. She is also in a new movie La Clef. The trailer and other promotion have currently been released. Vanessa recently won two Les Victoires de la Musique awards for her new album Divinidylle. Also, she is starting a summer tour for Divinidylle. In July, Vanessa is among the artists scheduled to appear at the Francofolies de la Rochelle festival and at Musilac festival. The dates for this year’s Francofolies de la Rochelle are July 11 – 16. The dates for this year’s Musilac are July 11-13. After the success of her third recording, Paradis launched a European tour, playing 70 concerts before returning to France to star in another film, the drama "Elisa" (1995), in which she played a girl placed in an orphanage after her mother committed suicide. Once again, Paradis' performance garnered raves from the critics and she was flooded with film offers.

Instead of playing another brooding teen, however, Paradis opted to show audiences her playful side in the role of a witch in the romantic comedy "Un Amour de sorciere" (1997), following that up with a role in the action comedy "1 Chance sur 2" (1998). 1999 saw Paradis give a fine performance as a heartbroken woman on the edge--literally--in "La Fille du pont/Girl on the Bridge". In this uneven comedy drama, she played a woman who meets a knife thrower just as she is about to leap to her death from a bridge. The man asks her to join his touring act as his target and she accepts, sparking an odd, but close relationship. Paradis was next seen in Terry Gilliam's fable "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" (lensed 2000) with her off-screen companion Johnny Depp.

Vanessa Paradis has been in a relationship with American actor Johnny Depp since 1998. Paradis says:"We met in 1994 at a mutual friend's house. He made a big impression on me and during my years of solitude, he never left my thoughts. Then, in 1998, we met again. Three months later, we decided to spend our lives together". In 1998 Johnny was working on "The Ninth Gate", filmed in France. In an interview, Johnny shares: "'It was love at first sight," Johnny Depp says of that night in 1998 when he saw his girlfriend-to-be, Vanessa Paradis, out on the town in Paris. "I was in the lobby of this restaurant and I just saw this back across the room, suddenly, the back turned and looked at me. And then the eyes that were attached to the back walked toward me and said, 'Hi. Do you remember me?' "I said yes, but I didn't remember because we had actually met a number of years before. But this time, I was caught."

They have a daughter, Lily-Rose Melody Depp (born 27 May 1999), and a son, John Christopher "Jack" Depp III (born 10 April 2002). Soon to marry Johnny Depp on June 14th this summer.

They divide their time between houses in the Hollywood Hills, their farm in the South of France, a house in the Somerset village Timsbury, and also own apartments in Paris, Manhattan and an island in the Bahamas. Paradis' 2000 album Bliss, another French chart topper, was dedicated to Depp and their daughter.
