Famous Quote

"Acting, I love it and I feel that I'm good at it, but the thing that makes me feel most alive is when I'm playing guitar and singing. just had to find something else to fulfill me. Always being a singer and writing, it was a blessing. My brother started making music that was the kind of music I always saw myself singing."

Biography Taryn Manning Biography

Taryn Manning (born November 6, 1978) is an American actress, fashion designer and singer/songwriter. She is the vocalist for electronic duo Boomkat. A petite, pretty actress, Taryn Manning alternately appears as a blonde and a brunette and possesses both a tough girl air and a childlike vulnerability that has helped her win some interesting roles early in her career. An Arizona native who relocated to Southern California at age 12, Manning spent her early years filled with competitive karate, roller-skating and dance. The multitalented teen was also a talented singer and attended the Orange County High School of the Arts. Making her breakthrough in 1999, Manning was featured in the film drama "Speedway Junky" and landed a recurring role on the Fox drama series "Get Real", which suffered an early cancellation. Guest shots on "The Practice" (ABC) and "Ryan Caulfield: Year One" (Fox) rounded out the year for the up and comer. Continuing to work in television, the actress appeared in the Fox TV-movie "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" (2000) and 2001 episodes of "NYPD Blue" (ABC) and "Boston Public", the latter a role tailor-made for her and BoomK.A.T., her musical collaboration with brother Kellin.

Manning was born in Falls Church, Virginia. Her parents divorced in 1981, and her mother, Sharyn, worked as a secretary and waitress in order to support Taryn and her older brother Kellin. Her father, Bill Manning, a musician and hotel manager, was the cousin of Archie Manning. When she was 14, her troubled father committed suicide. "My dad was a big drinker and he was cheating", according to Taryn. Her childhood in a trailer park was tough but happy.

Taryn grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where her mother moved to after her divorce, and later in Los Alamitos, California, where she attended Orange County High School of the Arts. Manning started dancing at age twelve. She's also a champion dancer, rollerskater, and has a third degree green belt in karate, having been named a State Champion in Karate in Arizona.

Manning began acting in the late 1990s, appearing in small roles in several film and television productions, including episodes of The Practice, Get Real, Boston Public, NYPD Blue and Popular. She also auditioned for the American version of Popstars, which aired in early 2001 on The WB. Much of Manning's career has revolved around music, from a cameo as a groupie in the 1999 ABC movie "Come On, Get Happy: The Partridge Family Story" to supporting roles opposite Britney Spears and Eminem in their feature debuts (2002's "Crossroads" and "8 Mile", respectively). 2002 also saw the actress take on a role alongside such luminaries as Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Wright Penn and Renee Zellweger in "White Oleander," Peter Kominsky's feature adaptation of Janet Fitch's bestseller.

Her first role in a major motion picture was in the Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez romantic-comedy crazy beautiful in which she played the best friend of Dunst's character. In 2001, Manning had a high-profile role in the teen romance "crazy/beautiful", stealing scenes from talented co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Jay Hernandez with her energetic and charming performance as a party girl. One of the few highlights of the film (which was driven by an uninspired middle-of-the-road soundtrack) was Manning's moment in the sun, ditching school and singing the appropriate "Bein' Bad", a song co-written by the actress and her brother. crazy beautiful was followed shortly by a prominent role in the 2002 feature film, Crossroads, where she played one of two best friends of pop star Britney Spears. Her subsequent film roles included supporting roles in White Oleander, 8 Mile, A Lot Like Love and the historical epic Cold Mountain.

In 2005 she appeared in the drama film Hustle & Flow, opposite Terrence Howard, playing a troubled prostitute in Memphis, Tennessee. The film received critical acclaim and was generally considered a success. Manning was nominated in Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards in category Best Breakthrough Performance for: Hustle & Flow. Manning was center stage, alongside co-star Vincent Kartheiser, in the indie drama "Dandelion" (2004), as a pair of star-crossed small town lovers. Along with supporting roles in the minor films "Lucky 13" (2004) and "Debating Robert Lee" (2004), Manning had notable appearances in A-list productions as well: she appeared briefly in Anthony Minghella's acclaimed Civil War melodrama "Cold Mountain" (2003) as part of a family of would-be seductresses, and had an amusing reappearing role in the Ashton Kutcher, Amanda Peet romantic comedy "A Lot Life Love" (2005) as Kutcher's annoying sister who makes the most out of the line "You're a dick, Oliver." In “Hustle & Flow” (2005), she delivered her most appealing performance yet when she played a tough-as-nails hooker whose pimp (Terrance Howard) decides to become a rap star. The movie won the Audience Award for Best Dramatic Feature at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and emerged with enough buzz to make one swoon.

Her next film was Weirdsville, a comedy co-starring Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley. In 2007, she played Ivy Chitty on the short-lived but critically acclaimed Fox television series Drive, which was a drama about various people competing in an illegal cross-country road race. In a comedy film After Sex, Manning played the supporting role of Alanna.

Manning is also co-starring in Jack and Jill vs. the World with actor Freddie Prinze Jr. The film tells about a cynical guy falls for a girl with a joie de vivre and a secret, a cultural revolution ensues. Manning stars in 2008 film "Shifter" with Bai Ling and singer Samantha Mumba.

In 2002 she sang a rendition of "I'll Take You There" with Tweet in several Gap commercials directed by Peter Lindbergh. In 2003, Manning and her brother Kellin formed the band Boomkat. Their debut album, Boomkatalog. One, was released on March 18, 2003. Boomkat released two singles "The Wreckoning" and "What U Do 2 Me". The first single, "The Wreckoning", hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

In an interview in October 2005's issue of Nylon magazine, Taryn mentioned that Boomkat would be back eventually, and that she is writing songs for the new album once they find another record label. DreamWorks Records was Boomkat's record label from 2002 to 2004. “ They dropped us, and it hurt. They didn't like the fact that I was an actress, too ” After a break from music, Boomkat released their first single in four years, called "Runaway" on April 8, 2008.

She has a clothing line called Born Uniqorn with best friend Tara Jane. In 2007, Manning appeared alongside other celebrities and regular people in the music video for Rockstar by Nickelback. She had five small tattoos, but in 2005 Manning went through a painful laser treatment to have her tattoos removed. Manning insisted she had "grown out" of her love for skin art and wanted all five of her tattoos lasered off. In February 2008 Jesse Metcalfe got into a fight with Manning's boyfriend at Hollywood club Social. Despite photos documenting the fight, Manning denied a fight. "It wasn't us," she told Usmagazine.

On September 22, 2005, Manning discussed her experience as one of 140 passengers on JetBlue Airways Flight 292, which performed an emergency landing with faulty landing gear. Speaking as a guest on Craig Ferguson's late night talk show, she explained, "When we saw our plane on TV as 'breaking news'... it was the most surreal, out of body experience I ever had... I just composed a little something so that if anything happened [family members] would know that our last goodbye wasn't on the phone... A lot of the women of course were crying... There was a gentleman across the way who was writing in his journal and crying, and seeing that isn't easy".

Upon landing safely, she described the atmosphere of jubilant cheering and applause inside the airplane, "It sounded like the RCA Dome in there" (where her cousin Peyton Manning plays football with the Indianapolis Colts). Landing gear failures, especially a known nose gear condition, in which the crew is prepared, is rarely serious to the passenger and crews safety, but aircraft damage can be extensive.
