Famous Quote

"I find that people are constantly coming up to me now. There's been a definite surge of people recognizing me and I'm not sure if it has to do with the DVDs or not, but I've sort of assumed that it does because the show has been off the air for three years now. I've been watching so many movies and they all have to do with the DVDs. It's just so much more convenient."

Biography Shiri Appleby Biography

Shiri Freda Appleby (born December 7, 1978) is an American actress. She is probably best known for her leading role as Liz Parker in the Roswell television series. A pretty brunette player with a charming freshness and likability, Shiri Appleby racked up a number of television credits before landing the role of Liz Parker, a teenage girl who is miraculously healed of a gunshot wound by a smitten classmate who confesses he is really an alien, on The WB sci-fi teen drama "Roswell". Appleby got her start in commercials at age four and from there landed her first series acting job, a recurring part on the NBC daytime drama "Santa Barbara" in 1985. Two years later the child performer made her TV-movie debut, with an appearance in NBC's "Blood Vows: The Story of a Mafia Wife" and could be seen in the following year's CBS drama "Go Toward the Light", about a young boy who contracts AIDS through a blood transfusion. Appleby made her big screen debut in the forgettable "Curse II: The Bite" (1989) the same year she was featured in the short-lived NBC sitcom "Knight & Daye".

In 1990, the young actress appeared in Lawrence Kasdan's comedy "I Love You to Death" before landing a regular role on the Norman Lear comedy "Sunday Dinner" (CBS, 1991). The series' brevity (airing only six episodes) failed to make the show a substantial vehicle for the actress' breakthrough. In 1992, Appleby was featured in the USA Network movie "Perfect Family" and was a frequent guest performer, playing teens on series ranging from the popular "Doogie Howser, M.D." (ABC) to the all but forgotten "Against the Grain" (NBC). She returned to films with a featured part in "Family Prayers" (1993), playing the potential girlfriend of a young Jewish boy in this 1969-set coming-of-age drama.

Appleby was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Dina (née Bouader), an Israeli-born Hebrew school teacher, and Jerry Appleby, a Jewish-American telecommunications executive. She and her younger brother, Evan, were raised in Calabasas, in Los Angeles County. Her mother is of Sephardic Moroccan Jewish background. In Hebrew, "Shiri" means either "my song" or simply "sing". She has a scar above her left eyebrow, resulting from a dog bite when she was young. To get over her fear of dogs, she went on the show Emergency Vets, accompanying staff veterinarian Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald (she also overcame another phobia in the same episode by holding a live snake, one of Fitzgerald's patients) and shortly after adopted a Tabby, which she named Abby.

Appleby graduated from Calabasas High School in 1997 and went on to major in English literature at the University of Southern California while also studying theater arts. She is known for her work in the community and active participation in charity events.

Appleby began her acting career at the age of four, starting with advertising for various products such as Cheerios and M&M's. Her first advertisement was for Raisin Bran but it was never aired. She has had guest appearances on many television programs, most notably thirtysomething (1987), Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989), ER (1994), Baywatch (1989), Xena: Warrior Princess (1995), 7th Heaven (1996) and Beverly Hills 90210 (1990). For Roswell, she tried out for the roles of both Isabel and Maria before landing the role of Liz Parker. On 7th Heaven, she played a gang member who hid weapons underneath her little brother's mattress. In addition to appearing in the 1994 premiere of popular NBC medical series "ER" in 1994, Appleby could be seen portraying a young woman caught up in a street gang on a 1997 episode of "7th Heaven".

During the 1998-99 season, Appleby had an amusing recurring role on "Xena: Warrior Princess" playing Tara, an aspiring young warrior who seeks to take Gabrielle's place as Xena's sidekick. After supporting roles in the 1999 features "The Other Sister" and the time-travel thriller "The Thirteenth Floor", she landed a starring role in the cult hit "Roswell" (The WB, 1999-2001; UPN, 2001- ), playing Liz Parker, a high school student and part-time waitress in the New Mexico town known as the site of an alleged 1947 UFO crash. Trouble comes to the restaurant where Liz works (owned by her father), and she is shot but miraculously healed by mysterious classmate Max (Jason Behr), an alien who has taken human form. Liz must then keep his secret, helping him and his alien compatriots Isabel (Katherine Heigl) and Michael (Brendan Fehr) dodge suspecting authorities. Part sci-fi adventure and part teen drama, the series proved an enjoyable hybrid, with Appleby's portrayal of the confused and sympathetic young woman serving as a particular highlight.

Appleby was in Bon Jovi's music video for "It's My Life" with Will Estes. She was also featured in the 2004 music video for the song "I Don't Want To Be" by Gavin DeGraw, opposite Scott Mechlowicz. She also appeared in Sense Field's music video for "Save Yourself" which is part of the Roswell soundtrack and featured in the first season DVD boxset.

In 2006 she could be seen in a recurring role on the now cancelled ABC drama Six Degrees as Anya, a young assistant in a relationship with a much older photographer. Later this year she was chosen to play Hildy Young in the new USA Network series To Love and Die that is scheduled to air early 2008. Shiri also participated in a short film called Carjacking directed by Dan Passman and co-stared by Geoff Stults from 7th Heaven fame.

In 2007, she was part of the movie What Love Is with Cuba Gooding Jr., Matthew Lillard and Anne Heche. She also participated in another short film, Love Like Wind, this one from Shaolin Film Productions. At the end the year, she appeared as Charlie Wilson's press secretary, aka Jailbait, in the film Charlie Wilson's War, which stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Appleby once dated Linkin Park drummer Rob Bourdon, with whom she attended the same high school. In June 2007, she began dating actor Zach Braff.
