"I know people think that acting is not quite the occupation of
grown ups, but it is actually the ultimate learning process: You get a multitude of experiences, all for the price of one life. I'm a Volver type of girl, 21 Grams, films like that. On the edge and really risky. Oh, it's fantastic stuff, all about the young Henry VIII and his brash, vibrant court. It's everything a period drama shouldn't be: super-sexy, raw, and violent." |

Natalie Dormer (born February 11, 1982) is an English actress. Natalie Dormer started studying ballet, jazz and modern dance at age three, but stopped when she reached age 16. Two years later, she relocated to London, where Dormer attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, studying drama under the same roof that spawned talents like Minnie Driver and Matthew Goode.
After honing her craft in British theatre, Dormer landed a substantial supporting role in “Casanova” (2005), a romantic comedy about the life and times of the world’s most famous lover (Heath Ledger). She next played a young heiress who gets involved with Detective John Rebus (Ken Scott) in the third instalment of the acclaimed BBC series, “Rebus: The Falls” (2006), before portraying Anne Boleyn, the doomed second wife of King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) in Showtime’s lavish and expansive 10-part series, “The Tudors” (2007- ).
Dormer attended Chiltern Edge secondary school, before moving to Reading Blue Coat School, an independent boys' boarding school that admitted girls in the sixth form. During her school years she trained in dance at the Allenova School of Dancing, before training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She is also a member of the London Fencing Academy.
Trained at the Webber Douglas Academy in London whose alumni include Rupert Friend, Matthew Goode, Hugh Bonneville and Minnie Driver. Enjoys fencing as a sport, and is a member of the London Fencing Academy. Is a mezzo soprano singer. On the basis of her performance in Casanova, Natalie has a three picture deal with Disney Touchstone. Speaks French.
Her role in "Casanova" was originally written to be much smaller. But Natalie so impressed director Lasse Hallstrom, he expanded her part, and also injected more humor into the role once he realized how well Natalie handled comedy.
She starred as Victoria in Casanova. After this performance, she secured a three film deal with Disney Touchstone. Dormer is currently starring as Anne Boleyn in Showtime's series The Tudors.
If Showtime's returning miniseries The Tudors occasionally strays from strict historical fact toward a bit of wanton violence and bodice-ripping, it doesn't mean that 26-year-old Natalie Dormer can't hold her own on the intricacies of court power struggles and the religious and political upheavals of Reformation Europe. "I was a dreadful swot at school, very geeky," she confesses, "and the head girl." Dormer admits to having been "horribly bullied" as if it were thoroughly deserved. Three years of training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London changed her. "I was very repressed," she says, "but they break your character down to reconstruct you." Well, they didn't do a bad job.
The experience might have helped Dormer loosen up, but it is her underlying intelligence as much as her alluring, feline-eyed, sensual-mouthed, sharp-cheekboned beauty that makes her compelling as the doomed Anne Boleyn. "It was the perfect part for me," she says between mouthfuls of smoked salmon and gulps of a gin and tonic at the Wolseley. "Early on in the first series, I was very green, but my role, my power, and my confidence grew along with Anne Boleyn's. We came of age at the same time." Dormer's only previous major movie credit was a cameo with the late Heath Ledger in Lasse Hallström's Casanova, which had to be expanded after she surprised herself, and the director, with "an unexpected gift for burlesque." Dormer claims not to mind getting typecast in corsets, but hankers for some role where she can "run around in jeans and a T-shirt with a gun in my hand." Fencing is her sport, though, which doesn't much help her cause.
Understandably, Dormer's wary of spilling the beans on her charismatic Irish costar, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, even though he's earning a reputation as Europe's answer to Robert Downey Jr. "The truth is," she says diplomatically, "he is very focused, very committed to his work, and he was very generous with me." Likely aware of their smoldering screen chemistry, Dormer explains horrified at the idea why she wouldn't date an actor, how there's only room for one overwrought emotionalist, and how she always goes for "solid-rock types." Currently she's dating someone sturdy who "works on the other side of the camera."
Her first movie role came in the 2005 movie, "Casanova," with Heath Ledger. Initially, her character was to have a small role in the film, but she impressed director Lasse Hallstrom so much, that he expanded her part in the film and added more comedy for her character after he realized how well she handled comedy. Not only did she impress Lasse Hallstrom, but she impressed Disney Touchtone as well, and they signed her to a 3 picture deal. Natalie has also appeared as one episode guests on such television shows as "Distant Shores" and "Rebus." Natalie is an accomplished mezzo soprano singer and enjoys fencing.
