Lake Bell (born March 24, 1979) is an American actress. Tall, curvy and possessed of an exotic, penetrating pair of eyes, actress Lake Bell surfaced in prime time several times in supporting roles before catching national attention on NBC’s hit supernatural aquatic adventure show “Surface” (2005 - ).

Bell was born in New York City, the daughter of Robin Bell, owner of the design firm www.robinbelldesign.com in New York City, and Harvey Siegel. Her father is Jewish and her mother is of W.A.S.P. background. She has an older brother named Luke Siegel who owns a sliding wall and door company called Raydoor in New York City. She also has two half-sisters, Courtney and Mackenzie.

Bell attended Westminster School, Connecticut in Simsbury, Connecticut and then attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York before transferring to Rose Bruford College in London, England. There, she landed roles in several theatrical productions, including The Seagull and The Pentecost. She remained in London for a year after graduating, then relocated to Los Angeles, California.

Bell landed her first big job with the lead female role in NBC's War Stories, also starring Jeff Goldblum. She made two guest appearances on ER in 2002, then went on to play Alicia Silverstone's wisecracking best friend, Victoria, in NBC's short-lived series Miss Match. Bell was back on the small screen in 2003 co-starring role on the short-lived Alicia Silverstone vehicle “Miss Match” (NBC, 2003). As the matrimonial attorney’s best friend, Bell helped Silverstone try to make matches for others while trying to find love for themselves. As the faithful sidekick, Bell garnered more attention from male viewers for her beguiling beauty than sympathy for her character.

In 2004, Bell made her debut as Sally Heep in The Practice, and her character was carried over into the series offshoot, Boston Legal, where she was made a regular cast member until she left the series in 2005. Bell showed up as firm lawyer Sally Heep, who used sexual politics to deal with clients while piquing the interest of James Spader’s morally slippery attorney Alan Shore, in four 2004 episodes of the David E. Kelley legal drama “The Practice” as the show was wrapping up its final season on ABC and simultaneously seeing some of the newer characters--including those played by Spader, William Shatner and Rhona Mitra--spun-off into their own series “Boston Legal” (ABC, 2004 - ).

There she was first season regular, caught up in an unfulfilling love affair with Shore that ultimately led to his dismissal from the firm. Bell was also departed midway through the first season, followed shortly by cast mates Mitra and Monica Potter when the successful show was nevertheless creatively retooled. Bell went on to play the lead role in the sci-fi show Surface, which premiered September 19, 2005, and was cancelled in May 2006.

Bell’s performances and her appeal to both male and female audiences had caught the attention of many a Hollywood executive, however, because she smashed through the glass ceiling to star in her own vehicle “Surface” (NBC, 2005 - ) the very next season, as Laura Daughtery, a charismatic but obsessive oceanographer and mother who finds something very wrong with the water. Bell spent a good deal of time soaking wet in her breakout role battling sea monsters on the genre adventure series, and although she was an adept swimmer, she admitted being terrified of the ocean when she took on the role.

In the fall of 2006, Bell returned to Boston Legal for two episodes, reprising her role as Sally Heep as opposing counsel to Alan Shore (portrayed by James Spader). Her film work includes Chris Fisher's The Hillside Strangler (2004), Love Your Work (2003), Speakeasy (2002), and Slammed (2001). She recently wrapped on her latest film, Pride and Glory (2008), which also stars Edward Norton and Colin Farrell. She also has a leading role in the upcoming thriller Still Waters (2008), starring opposite Jason Clarke and Clifton Collins, Jr. She also co-starred with Paul Rudd and Eva Longoria Parker in the movie Over Her Dead Body, which opened on February 1, 2008.
