"I'm not a prettier everywoman. I am an everywoman that they clean up awfully well for
TV. I'd rather not have a moment when I'm known for my looks; being funny and interesting lasts longer." |

Kelly Maria Ripa (born October 2, 1970) an American actress, television personality and talk show host. Since February 2001, she has served as the co-host of Live with Regis and Kelly, along with Regis Philbin. Earlier in her career, Ripa played Hayley Vaughan Santos on All My Children; she also played Faith Fairfield on Hope & Faith. Both are television series on ABC. With her ability to balance dramatic and comedic television roles with a successful family life and morning talk-show, Kelly Ripa proved to be a paradigm of the modern working mother.
Though her coy sex appeal and dramatic flair contributed to a 12-year career on the long-time soap “All My Children” (ABC, 1970- ), it was Ripa’s vibrant personality and unique sense of humor that made her a morning talk show star. Able to stand on her own opposite the brazen antics of television veteran Regis Philbin, Ripa breathed new life into “Live with Regis and Kelly” (ABC, 1988- ). A dancer since the age of three, Ripa took up theater as a teenager, performing in her high school production of “The Ugly Duckling.” After graduating in 1989, Ripa attended Camden Community College in Camden, NJ and performed in local theater productions, including “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.” Ripa made her first television appearance in 1989 as a dancer on “Dance Party USA” (USA, 1986-1992) and made her acting debut the following year as Hayley Vaughan on the longtime soap “All My Children.” Ripa’s character quickly caught on with viewers of the show, proving to be a steady gig for the actress.
Ripa remained with the series for a 12-year run. The show also played a pivotal role in Ripa’s personal life; paired with actor Mark Consuelos on the series in 1995, the on-screen couple fell in love off screen as well, eloping to Las Vegas, NV in 1996. Ripa’s down-to-earth personality and willingness to share her off-camera life with viewers quickly made her one of the most popular names on morning talk-show circuit.
Kelly Ripa was born in Camden County, New Jersey, the daughter of Esther, a homemaker, and Joseph Ripa, a labor union president and bus driver. Kelly Ripa is 3/4 Italian, 1/4 Irish; her father is Italian-American, while her mother is half Irish-American, half Italian-American. Ripa's father has been a freeholder for Camden County, New Jersey since January 2004.
Kelly Ripa went to Berlin Community School in Berlin, NJ, then attended school at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. She performed in high school plays and was discovered while performing in a play during her senior year of high school, The Ugly Duckling. Ripa acted in local theater and was a featured regular on USA Network's Dance Party USA – an afternoon teen music program.
In 1995, Ripa met Mark Consuelos, her co-star on All My Children; the two married on May 1, 1996. The couple have three children Michael Joseph Consuelos, born June 2, 1997; Lola Grace Consuelos, born June 16, 2001; and Joaquin Antonio Consuelos, born February 24, 2003.
Ripa acquired her first major acting role as goth teen turned suffering heroine Hayley Vaughan on the soap opera All My Children. While there, the character would become a popular fixture.
Later, Ripa was selected to work alongside Regis Philbin for the long-running talk show Live with Regis and Kelly. Ripa was on double duty, but the following year in 2002, Ripa left All My Children. A few months before Ripa hosted Live, she appeared on a celebrity version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and walked away with $250,000 for charity.
In September 2003, she was back on double duty when she co-starred (with Faith Ford) on Hope & Faith, a situation comedy. She portrayed Faith Fairfield, a former soap star whose character is killed off and who moves in with (and subsequently wreaks havoc on) her sister Hope's family. Hope & Faith survived for three seasons before a ratings decline led to its cancellation.
In June 2004, Ripa agreed to continue as Live co-host for at least five more years, at a salary that the tabloid television show Extra reported was $8 million/year. In October 2006, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos, also an actor, were partnering with producers from Hope & Faith on a sitcom for The CW Television Network that would be loosely based on the couple's experiences as soap opera actors. In April 2007, Ripa hosted the 2007 TV Land Awards. In May 2007, Ripa stated that she most likely is done with acting for the time being.
On August 14, 2002, guest Judith Light created a stir on Live with Regis and Kelly when she got into a shouting match with Kelly after Kelly corrected Judith's pronunciation of "Worcestershire". This became a recurring topic on the show, with the on-air talent frequently making light of the incident.
On November 17, 2006, Clay Aiken was a guest host on Live with Regis and Kelly. During an interview with Cheryl Burke, Aiken covered Kelly Ripa's mouth with his hand and Ripa flinched and said "...I don't know where that hand has been." There was considerable reaction after Kelly mentioned the incident on her show four days later, with Rosie O'Donnell scolding Ripa for what appeared to be a "homophobic" reaction. Aiken mocked the controversy on the 2006 American Music Awards a few days later with Tori Spelling.
On October 20, 2008, Kelly was talking about the upcoming 2008 World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies and happened to be talking about former baseball player Mike Schmidt. When she mentioned his name again, she accidentally said "Mike Shits" on live television.
Finishing a 12-year run on “All My Children” in 2002 – along with husband Mark Consuelos – Ripa continued to act while serving as host of “Regis and Kelly.” Venturing into primetime television in 2002, Ripa appeared in a recurring role on the NBC drama “Ed” (2000-04) and went on to star alongside Faith Ford in the ABC sitcom, “Hope & Faith” (2003-06) as Faith Fairfield, a soap opera star who moves in with her sister after her character is killed off. Though the series initially returned favorable ratings in its first two seasons, its ranking began to slip and the series was cancelled in 2006.
Ripa continued to excel as host of “Regis and Kelly,” however, and the break from acting allowed her to focus more on family life. Ripa’s ability to relate her home life and role as a mother of three became one of her major selling points on the morning show; viewers related to Ripa’s personable attitude and sense of humor. Ratings for the morning show increased and the series went on to earn Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Host of a Talk Show five consecutive years in a row from 2002 to 2006.

Participated in the ABC First-Ever Super Soap Weekend at Disney/MGM Studios, FL on October 19 and 20, 1996.
