"I was addicted to the original "Star Trek" when I was growing up, because of my dad. We grew up in St. Helen, Oregon and we weren't allowed to watch a lot of TV. I don't think we even had more than three channels, so it was basically watch "Dynasty" with my mom, watch "Star Trek" with my dad, or watch the mating rituals of beavers on Oregon Public Broadcasting. So my brother and I watched Star Trek." |

Kathryn Ann Sackhoff (born April 8, 1980), better known as Katee Sackhoff, is an American actress best known for playing Captain Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on the Sci Fi Channel television program Battlestar Galactica. In 2004 she was nominated for a Saturn Award in the "Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series" category for her work in the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. In May 2006, she won the Saturn Award for the same role. Winning her breaktrough role as the tough-talking Starbuck on the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries “Battlestar Galactica” (2003) wasn’t exactly easy at the start for Katee Sackhoff.
With relatively few screen credits under her belt, the young blond actress had to win over die-hard fans who were incensed that a girl would be taking over the cult favorite role played by Dirk Benedict in the original 1978 series. Even if she was a babe. But even the faithful were quickly silenced, as Sackhoff made the character of the cigar-smoking, card-playing space pilot her own albeit reinvented as a curvaceous tomboy.
Sackhoff grew up in St. Helens, Oregon. Her mother Mary is an ESL program coordinator and her father Dennis is a land developer. She graduated from Sunset High School in Beaverton in 1998. She participated in swimming and ballet until her right knee was injured, which led her to begin practicing yoga, which she continues today. Sackhoff has three tattoos: One, on the back of her neck, is a Chinese symbol ('choice'). Another, a cross, is covered with bandages whenever her shoulder is uncovered during shooting because there is no Christianity in the Battlestar Galactica universe. The third is on her right forearm and reads "bona fiscalia," meaning "public property" in legal Latin. This tattoo is visible in numerous episodes. Other elements from Sackhoff's life have been incorporated into the show: a ring she wears on her thumb has been described as Starbuck's engagement ring from Zak Adama, and the actress's decision to quit smoking between seasons two and three was mirrored by her character.
Katie Sackhoff's most famous role is as the Colonial Fleet fighter pilot Starbuck, in the Sci-Fi Channel series Battlestar Galactica . In the original Battlestar Galactica, the Starbuck character was male, portrayed by Dirk Benedict. Creator Ronald D. Moore's decision to change the character's gender for the contemporary remake was originally controversial with fans of the original series, but most of them have come to accept Sackhoff's take of the hot-shot pilot. In preparing for the part she found it difficult to imagine a strong woman role model so she chose her brother as her model. Bionic Woman - Sarah Corvus. Sackhoff was cast as the evil cyborg Sarah Corvus in the short-lived NBC series. Corvus was, according to the show, the "first" bionic subject who had succumbed to temptations of its power.
Has an older brother. Father Dennis is a land developer. Mother Mary is a coordinator for an English as a Second Language program. Has a tattoo of a Japanese symbol for "choice." Also has a crucifix on her left shoulder blade and and a Latin phrase on her right arm that means "public property". Has 2 dogs, one named "Meatball" and a newly adopted puppy she named "Nelly B" after her character on "The Education of Max Bickford" (2001).
Her "Battlestar Galactica" (2004) co-star Tricia Helfer is one of her best friends. Practices yoga regularly and goes on 10-mile runs every Sunday. Decided to quit smoking when she received fan mail from little girls saying they wanted to be like 'Starbuck' when they grew up. Her dog Meatball posed with her in a photo-shoot by photographer Frank Veronsky. Was a waitress at the Saddle Ranch Chop House before she got her big break. Briefly attended Santa Monica College before she quit to focus on acting. Was required to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the final episodes of the third season of "Battlestar Galactica" in order to preserve the secrecy regarding the fate of her character. Was featured in Entertainment Weekly's '100 Stars We Love Right Now' (2007).
Sackhoff moved down to Los Angeles after high school, and in short order landed a role in the Kirsten Dunst TV movie “Fifteen & Pregnant,” (1998). She followed that with the lead role of Claire on the MTV pilot “Locust Valley” (1999). From there, it was a steady stream of television work, including parts in “Hefner: Unauthorized” (1999) and “The Fearing Mind,” (2000). After a recurring role on the sexy MTV series “Undressed” (2000), she won her first regular part on a major network comedy-drama, CBS’ “The Education of Max Bickford,” (2001) opposite Richard Dreyfuss and Marcia Gay Harden. Sackhoff made her big screen debut with “My First Mister” (2001) with Christine Lahti, and then made her genre splash with “Halloween: Resurrection” (2002). Between silver screen gigs, she’s had stints on “ER,” “Zoe Duncan Jack and Jane," “Boomtown" and “Cold Case."
The Education of Max Bickford - Nell Bickford. Nip/Tuck - Dr. Theodora Lowe. Sackhoff will join the sixth season of the hit FX series Nip/Tuck, playing a new doctor who becomes a threat to Sean and his work. Sackhoff is scheduled for 4 episodes. Sackhoff provided the voice of a female marine in the video game Halo 3. Sackhoff plays the female lead in the action/scifi movies The Last Sentinel and White Noise 2: The Light. She also had a role in Halloween: Resurrection. Although the new incarnation of “Battlestar” and its subsequent series (2005 - ) was met with a fair amount of skepticism when it debuted, new and old fans alike have come to embrace the show as one of the best sci-fi shows to grace the airwaves, thanks in no small part to Sackhoff, who managed to be both tough and vulnerable, bringing an extra dimension to a critical character in the thrilling space saga.
Katee Sackhoff may only be in her late 20s, but she’s already a ten-year veteran of television. She landed her first breakout role in 1998’s Fifteen and Pregnant, alongside Kirsten Dunst, then moved on to guest-star on ER with Maura Tierney and Mekhi Phifer and Cold Case. Katee was also a regular on the Richard Dreyfuss vehicle The Education of Max Bickford. Katee then landed the role of Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on Battlestar Galactica. Silencing critics early on, she’s made Starbuck one of the most popular and compelling characters on the show.
Katee’s fame rests on her role on Battlestar Galactica. While she has a strong fan base from that show, few stars from sci-fi shows, even acclaimed ones, achieve mainstream stardom. Still, Katee is beginning to be noticed in movies like How I Married My High School Crush and other TV shows like the Bionic Woman.
