Kara Tointon (born August 5, 1983 in Basildon, Essex) is a British actress, best known for playing Dawn Swann in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders. Standing at an average 5ft 5in, with a cheeky glint in her deep brown eyes we have Kara Tointon - a girl who is anything but average. She was brought into the world on August 5th 1983 in a small close-knit town called Basildon in Essex but shortly moved to Southend. Ambitious and confident from an early age, Kara often made up her own words for things and was always amusing those around her with her random and creative moods. If she wasn't an actress she would have attended art college. During her teenage years she attended a private school and it was here she made friends for life. Tointon was born in Basildon in Essex but shortly afterwards moved to Southend. Her younger sister Hannah is also an actress best known for her soap work, playing Katy Fox in Hollyoaks. Tointon is 5"5' tall. At the tender age of 7 Kara began her acting career. She attended speech and drama lessons at school and she also took part in LAMDA examinations, entering local musical festivals doing poetry recital. Her first proper acting experience came when she played the part of Birgita in The Sound of Music at the Cliffs Pavillion. Shortly after that her first paid job was as one of the children in the pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. After joining Sylvia Young Agency at age 12, her first appearance on television was as an extra in Eastenders. "The first thing I ever did was when I was 12 and had a non-speaking part. It was at Sonia's birthday party and I was just at the back eating crisps. It was literally a second on screen but my mum has still got a video of it," recalls Kara. Shortly after, Kara began to appear in national adverts for AOL, Pringles, McDonalds and Diamond Car Insurance which makes her "cringe" when it aired nearly every commercial break. She left Sylvia Young at the age of 16 to attend college for interior design. She decided to give acting another shot and won the part of Pauline Young in Channel 4's hit tv show, Teachers. Kara then decided her craft and talent was calling and decided to leave school and act full time. Since Kara left her role in Teachers, she has appeared in numerous tv shows and films. Tointon began her acting career at age seven. She had speech and drama lessons at school. She also took part in LAMDA examinations, entering local musical festivals performing poetry recitals. Not only did she appear in Mile High but in December returned to her former Dream Team role as Gina Moliano, rapidly becoming a fan favourite within the show. Kara carried on her role as Gina into May 2005 and was voted 4th favourite character by fans. Almost a month to the day that her last Dream Team episode aired, it was revealed to the press that she would be joining the BBC soap Eastenders as a major new character. Her potrayal of Dawn Swann has skyrocketed Kara to a new level of fame and she's grateful for every minute of it. "I'm in awe of so many people - especially Barbara Windsor, Wendy Richard and Pam St Clement. They are the Eastenders' angels who I grew up with and all have helped me out." In 2004, Tointon appeared in Mile High and in December returned to her former Dream Team role as Gina Moliano until May 2005.Almost a month to the day that her last Dream Team episode aired, it was revealed to the press that she would be joining the BBC soap EastEnders in September 2005 as a new character, Dawn Swann. Not only is she a wonderful actress but she is also highly trained in dance, specializing in Aerobics, Ballet, Bass-Baritone, Cabaret Singing, Choreography, Contemporary, Jazz and Tap. In her spare time she enjoys painting, swimming and skiing. She is a girl with endless talent and skill. Kara won the Sport Relief version of Strictly Come Dancing in March 2008. Her partner was former Strictly Come Dancing champion, Mark Ramprakash. When in The Sound of Music, she met ex-Busted member James Bourne, who played Kurt. The couple dated on-and-off for seven years. Tointon was rumored to have dumped Bourne when Busted split up, because Bourne was no longer in a band but both parties have denied this, stating they had split up five months previously due to scheduling conflicts. On the set of Dream Team, Tointon met her former boyfriend Terry Kiely, who played Karl Fletcher in the show. The couple announced their split in the summer of 2006. But Kara often likes to take a step back from the limelight to spend time with her family and friends who she strives to spend as much time with as possible. Her mother and younger sister Hannah in particular, who recently moved away from Essex to London to be closer to her. They both live in the flat above Kara's in North London. Kara is also a keen shopper and likes to spend hours at a time rooting around London for rare, one-off outfits. Fading into the background isn't her style. This girl is a born entertainer and the world can't stop watching. Tointon also dated her former EastEnders co-star, James Alexandrou, but split after realizing that they had drifted apart after spending less time with each other in 2007. |
