Famous Quote

"I think it's difficult for a young girl like me, because there's a certain time for young actresses, which is like a really juicy period when all the parts are love interests and young heroines. Of course, there's always work for men, whatever age they are. So I'm really going to go for it. And if it all goes wrong, I'll go and do panto. Once you've done a big film, more films come your way if you're good. Or even if you're not good. I've got so much stuff coming up, and one of them is incredible. I so want to tell you about it, but if I told you, I'd have to kill you."

Biography Gemma Arterton Biography

Gemma Arterton (born February 1986, in Dartford, Kent) is an English actress. Gemma Arterton rose to fame in her native Britain during the late 2000s, with a series of roles in productions that crossed genre lines. She landed one of her first major assignments as an alluring, mischievous boarding-school student, Kelly, in the 2007 St. Trinian's (an update of Frank Launder's 1953 comedy classic The Belles of St. Trinian's), then signed for a supporting part in the legendary Stephen Poliakoff's made-for-television drama Capturing Mary. Arterton made headlines around the world when cast as Fields, one of the famed Bond girls, in the 22nd installment of the James Bond series (2008).

Arterton and her younger sister Hannah, were raised by their father who was a welder, and mother who was a cleaner. After attending a grammar school in Gravesend, and attending a performance arts course, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on a full grant. This British beauty has brown eyes and has a natural London accent.

Arterton won her first professional role (in Stephen Poliakoff's Capturing Mary) while she was still at drama school. She made her stage debut as Rosaline in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost at the Globe Theatre, London. She made her film debut in the 2007 St Trinian's movie St Trinian's as Head Girl Kelly, a role she gained in competition with Sienna Miller. Gemma won her first professional role in Stephen Poliakoff's Capturing Mary (2007) while she was still at drama school. "On my first-ever day, in front of 50 actors, I had to do this monologue and I was petrified. My legs were shaking under my dress. It broke me in very quickly." Gemma played Liza in the made for TV movie and appeared among a fine cast including the likes of Maggie Smith and David Walliams.

Arterton made her stage debut as Rosaline in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost at the Globe Theatre in London in 2007. Her performance prompted a reviewer for Broadway.com state: "As the smoothest-cheeked and possibly sharpest-tongued of the pursued ladies, Gemma Arterton makes a truly notable stage debut; here's someone of whom we'll no doubt be seeing more, not least, I would imagine, as a first-class Beatrice." Next Gemma appeared as head girl Kelly in St Trinian's (2007), a role she gained in competition with Sienna Miller. "I was just gutted when I heard that she really wanted it," admits Gemma. "I mean... Sienna Miller! I never really thought I was in with a chance anyway, but when her name was bandied about, I felt like throwing in the towel." Of course, the role went to Gemma in the end, and she was well received for her efforts. "She's the baddest of them all," says Gemma of her character. "She's 17 going on 30."

Towards the end of 2007, the actress was rumoured to be cast in Bond 22. The following January her agents, ICM, confirmed her involvement with the movie franchise. Arterton will play MI6 Agent Fields along-side Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench, in what is described as a "nice-sized role". The film is currently filming in London and is expected to be in cinemas from November 2008. She appeared in the 2008 comedy Three And Out with Mackenzie Crook and Imelda Staunton.

Arterton appears in a number of forthcoming film and television productions, including the next James Bond film, Quantum of Solace. Chosen from around 1500 candidates, Arterton will play a character called Fields, in what is described as a "nice-sized role". Also due out in 2008 starring Gemma is the Guy Ritchie movie RocknRolla, Jane Austen related mini-series Lost in Austen and comedy 3 and Out, which also stars Mackenzie Crook, Colm Meaney and Imelda Staunton.

Arterton lives with her boyfriend, who works in film production, in London. When asked about what the future may bring to her, Gemma replied: "Really, I'm not in a position to even think about what might be. A few months ago, I was selling make-up. Now I should concentrate on being grateful that I can pay the rent for a while." One may expect great things from this talented and unique English actress.

When it launches in October 2008 she will be the face of Avon's Bond Girl 007 fragrace. Having already started in a series of low-key adverts for cosmetics company Avon, in May 2008 Arterton requested a role opposite model Kate Moss for Rimmel, but was blocked on contractual terms under her Avon contract. Arterton lives with her boyfriend, who is employed in the film production industry, in London.
