Daryl Christine Hannah (born December 3, 1960) is an American film actress. After making her screen debut in 1978, Hannah starred in a number of Hollywood films throughout the 1980s notably Blade Runner, Splash, Wall Street and Roxanne. Hannah has recently had a number of notable roles including the Kill Bill series. The step-niece of distinguished cinematographer Haskell Wexler, this attractive blonde came to the fore with her enjoyable performance as a mermaid in Ron Howard's comedy hit, "Splash" (1984). Hannah's striking features have been the cornerstone of her career--she was perfectly cast in a supporting role as a beautiful android in Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" (1982)--though she has latterly proved herself capable of less glamorous roles, as in "Steel Magnolias" (1989) and "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" (1991). "The Clan of the Cave Bear" (1986), however, was one such experiment which failed all around. Many of Hannah's more recent films, though, while trying to capitalize on her penchant for whimsy, have offered her little but standard leading lady duties ("Crazy People" 1990, "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" 1992). Hannah was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Susan Wexler, a producer, and Don Hannah, a tugboat and barge company owner. Her parents divorced shortly after her birth and her mother remarried Jerrold Wexler, a businessman and brother of Haskell Wexler, a noted cinematographer. Hannah has been a vegetarian since age eleven. She grew up with siblings Don Hannah and Page Hannah, now married to record producer Lou Adler, as well as half-sister Tanya Wexler. Hannah became interested in movies at a young age, partly due to insomnia. She was very shy and diagnosed as "borderline autistic". Hannah attended the private Francis W. Parker School (where she played on the boys' soccer team) and the Chicago Latin school before enrolling at the University of Southern California. Hannah branched out in 1994 when she directed, produced, and wrote a 12-minute short, entitled "The Last Supper," which won the Jury Award from the Berlin International Film Festival for Best Short. She also continued with her acting career, starring in the drama "The Ties That Bind" with Keith Carradine in 1995 and the comedy "Too Much" with Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas in 1996. Throughout the entire first half of the 1990's, Hannah was mostly in the spotlight for being John F. Kennedy's longtime girlfriend (they dated from 1989 to 1994). She emerged from his shadow as a classic sort of actress but was still largely associated with her her "Splash" role. Hannah made her film debut in 1978 with a brief appearance in Brian De Palma's horror film The Fury. Her first notable role came as the acrobatic and violent replicant, Pris, in Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. She then was cast as a beautiful blonde mermaid in Ron Howard's 1984 fantasy, Splash, which starred Tom Hanks and was a major financial success, establishing Hannah as a high-profile film actress. Hannah's successes in the remainder of the 1980s ranged from Steel Magnolias and the Academy Award-winning Wall Street to the 1986 film version of the best-seller The Clan of the Cave Bear. She starred in the title role of Fred Schepisi's 1987 film Roxanne, a modern retelling of Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac, a performance which was described as "sweet" and "gentle" by film critic Roger Ebert. She also appeared in The Pope of Greenwich Village with co-stars Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts and played the daughter of Jack Lemmon in both of the Grumpy Old Men comedies. In 1995, Hannah was chosen by Empire magazine as #96 of the "100 Sexiest Stars in Film History." That same year she appeared as homicidal sociopath Leann Netherwood in The Tie That Binds. Hannah took a variety of low-profile roles for the rest of the decade and appeared on stage in 2000 in the London production of "The Seven Year Itch." She received mixed reviews but continued to work steadily in film for the next several years. Hannah remained an enigmatic actress, at times showing comic genius and serious dramatic ability while still managing to get stuck in dead-end roles, such as playing Mandy Moore's mother in the teen weeper film "A Walk to Remember" (2002). As she aged, Hannah displayed an increasing comfort zone with her still-perfect body, baring much of it as a troubled exotic dancer Angel in "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" (2002), a film with gritty and serious overtones that still never quite shines beyond its high nudity factor (the actress reportedly also performed live in various Los Angeles-area stip clubs in preparation for the role). Nevertheless, she delivered a strong turn in the Polish brother's entrancing "Northfork" (2003) as the regal, empathetic hermaphrodite Flower Hercules, one of four apparent angels who visit the dreams of the son of a religious zealot who stayes behind in a '50s era Montana town about to be obliterated by a new dam; she was also compelling in writer-director John Sayles' "Casa de Los Babys" (2003) as the athletic, ever-running masseuse Skipper, one of several American woman living temporarily in Mexico while waiting to adopt babies, who is haunted by her three miscarriages. Of her most recent roles, the most memorable may be that of the one-eyed assassin Elle Driver in Kill Bill Volume 1 and Kill Bill Volume 2, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Her performance in these films, as well as her appearances in Northfork, Michael Radford's Dancing at the Blue Iguana, John Sayles' Casa de los Babys and Silver City, have been described by some as a comeback. Following a highly touted nude spread in Playboy magazine at age 43, Hannah appeared in her most high profile role in ages, playing the iconic one-eyed assassin Elle Driver, one of the many killers The Bride (Uma Thurman) hopes to delvier evngeance upon in writer-director Quentin Tarantino's explotation film tribute "Kill Bill, Vol. 1" (2003). Hannah wrote, directed and produced a short film, The Last Supper, which won an award at the Berlin Film Festival. She directed, produced and was cinematographer for the documentary Strip Notes. It aired on Channel 4 in the UK and on HBO and was about the research Hannah did for her role as a stripper in Dancing at the Blue Iguana. Hannah and actress Hilary Shepard created two board games, "Love It Or Hate It" and "LIEbrary," with Hannah previewing the latter on Ellen Degeneres' talk show in 2005. Hannah, a keen environmentalist, has her own weekly video blog called DH Love Life on sustainable solutions. She is often the sound recordist, camera person and on-screen host for the blog. Her home runs on solar power and is built with green materials. She drives a car that runs on biodiesel. In late 2006, she volunteered to act as a judge for Treehugger.com's "Convenient Truths" contest. Hannah has never married. She had a long-term relationship with singer Jackson Browne who had his roadies bring her backstage after a concert during her senior year at Parker -- (she is the female voice on Browne's 1985 hit song with Clarence Clemons, "You're a Friend of Mine"). She was with Browne from 1978 through 1992. The relationship ended with rumors being spread in the press of domestic violence that were later proven false. After Browne, she had a brief relationship with John F. Kennedy, Jr. and was romantically linked with actor Val Kilmer. She is the sister-in-law of music producer Lou Adler, who is married to Hannah's sister, Page (who met Adler while Daryl was seeing Browne). |
