Famous Quote

"Trust in yourself. Your perceptions are often far more accurate than you are willing to believe. I feel that I'm at my best as a person and that I'm coming home when I walk on to a set, or on to a stage, so if I can perform in one way or another I think I'll be okay. People told me, when I was coming through the ranks, that a mark of a great actor is one who deals with the period of unemployment as well as they deal with the period of employment."

Biography Claudia Black Biography

Claudia Lee Black (born in Sydney, New South Wales on October 11, 1972) is an Australian actress, best known for her portrayals of Aeryn Sun and Vala Mal Doran in the science fiction television series Farscape and Stargate SG-1 respectively. An exotic looking brunette capable of projecting both strength and a sultry air, Australian actress Claudia Black earned a cult following with her co-starring role as Aeryn Sun, a commando pilot trained to keep her emotions in check, in "Farscape" (Sci-Fi Channel, 1999- ).

Claudia Lee Black was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. She was educated at the Kambala Girls School, in Sydney. She has lived in Europe, New Zealand and England. The Sydney-born performer was a finalist in the 1990 Globe Shakespeare competition and toured Europe as Portia in "The Merchant of Venice". Back home, she graced the stages in works as diverse as "Loose Ends" and "Little Women" (as the headstrong Jo) and became a constant presence on Australian television portraying Nurse Claire Bonacci on "A Country Practice" (1993-94) and a Greek lawyer in "City Life" (1996). She also drew attention for her turn as an hermaphrodite in a 1998 guest shot in the off-beat crime drama "Good Guys Bad Guys".

Claudia has participated in Australian television and movies. She portrayed a hermaphrodite named Jill Mayhew in the Australian television series "Good Guys Bad Guys". She also had a leading role in the New Zealand soap opera City Life playing the role of Greek lawyer Angela Kostapas.

For her role in Farscape, Black was nominated Best Actress by Saturn Award in 2001 and 2002, and won the award in 2005. She has appeared in the feature films Queen of the Damned and Pitch Black. Black also appears as Vala Mal Doran in Stargate SG-1 as a regular cast member starting in season ten; she portrayed the same character in one season eight episode ("Prometheus Unbound") and eight season nine episodes. In 2004, she was voted "#7 Hottest Scifi Babe" by Scifi WorldNet.

In the fall 2007 NBC TV show "Life" Black was cast in the supporting role of Jennifer Conover for the initial pilot. Due to Claudia's second pregnancy, the part was recast and the role was given to actress Jennifer Siebel when the series was picked up. Interestingly, NBC still used footage of Black, and none of Siebel, when promoting the show's debut.

Popular at sci-fi conventions, Black showed her talent at singing and playing the guitar at the Farscape conventions. Black has also appeared in theatre. She once played Portia in a tour of the Merchant of Venice. She has also had parts in "Spotlight On Women," "Portrait Of Dorian Gray," "Loose Ends," and "Pick Ups" for the Belvoir Street Theatre; "Little Women" and "The World Knot" for the Bicentennial Opera. Black is also a professional singer of jazz and classical music and is often admired for her exotic speaking voice.

There has been much debate on the various scifi bulletin boards concerning her actual birth year. She herself has consistently declined to give an answer as to her birth year - when asked about her birth date she simply replies, "October 11." Finalist 1990 Globe Shakespeare Competition. Her pregnancy was written into the "Stargate SG-1" (1997) Season Nine finale "Crusade" and "Camelot". While filming her supporting role as a transport passenger stranded on a strange planet in "Pitch Black" (2000), the actress was asked to help read actors auditioning for a new sci-fi series to be produced in Australia.

Although the show's producers had intended to hire an American actress, the casting agent believed she would be perfect for the role. Black made a tape and was later invited to Sydney to audition for and landed the part of Aeryn Sun on "Farscape". The actress nicely projected the character's strength and toughness but also developed a very palpable sexual chemistry with co-star Ben Browder (as human astronaut John Crichton). As the show went on, Aeryn developed into a fascinating and highly watchable character and the actress garnered legions of fans.

She gave birth to a boy in December 2005. She gave birth to her second son in November 2007. She has appeared in two different series in which her character lived in or visited the Lost City of Atlantis: in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys: Atlantis (#3.22)" (1997), she played Cassandra, a scientist living in the city, while in "Stargate SG-1: The Pegasus Project (#10.3)" (2006), she played Vala Mal Doran, a regular character on that series, who visited the city, located in the Pegasus galaxy.

In order to film the mini-series Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, Black postponed her honeymoon in 2004. According to an interview with TV Guide, Black gave birth to a boy in December 2005. She appears pregnant in the story arc of Stargate SG-1 beginning with the episode "Crusade". According to SG-1 co-star Michael Shanks, Black gave birth to her second son in November 2007.
