"You're catching me in the shock phase. I'm looking forward to joining the roster of women who have personified the image of beauty for Estee Lauder over the years. This is an incredible opportunity. There's always competition out there. That's what makes life exciting. It was quite natural. It was a beautiful thing. We started with tops on, fully clothed." |

Carolyn Murphy (born on August 11, 1975) is an American model. Although she didn't intend on becoming a model during her childhood, she eventually enrolled in a modeling school thanks to the encouragement of her mother. It didn't take long for her to gain recognition, and soon she was taking on local modeling jobs and attending modeling conventions. An agent at one of these conventions spotted Carolyn, and before she knew it, she was modeling in Paris and New York. Fast-forward several years, when Carolyn was spending most of her time modeling in New York City. Not only has she appeared in countless fashion shows, but she has also posed for many fashion magazine covers, including Vogue (US, France, UK, and Italy), Harper's Bazaar, W, Elle (UK and France), and Marie Claire (Italy) -- so don't be surprised if her gorgeous face looks familiar.
Carolyn already has experience attaching her face to a brand, as she starred in Calvin Klein's perfume commercials and print ads for the "Contradiction" fragrance, and in September 2001, Carolyn was named Estee Lauder's newest spokesperson. While actress and producer Elizabeth Hurley has been the cosmetics company's spokesperson for the past seven years, Carolyn and Elizabeth's glamorous appeal complement each other. The start of Carolyn's Estee Lauder career was marked with her first appearance in the billion-dollar company's worldwide magazine campaign, as well as ads for makeup, skin care and the spa.
But she didn't need Estee Lauder to give her supermodel status; she received that when she was named 1998's Model of the Year at the VH1 Fashion Awards. She was also one of the models to grace the cover of Vogue's "Models of the Millennium" issue. Carolyn successfully made the transition from model to actress in 1999, when she made an appearance in Barry Levinson's film, Liberty Heights. The director wanted to cast someone with a Grace Kelly appeal (ironically, Carolyn has been dubbed "The Blond Haired Gene Tierney," by Elle), and she fit the bill. She auditioned for the role after her agent pushed her to, and unlike many other model-turned-actresses, she was praised for her work. Estee Lauder's newest face is also a new mom, as her daughter Dylan Blue was born December 2000. Carolyn currently lives with her husband, surfing entrepreneur, Jake Schroeder.
Murphy was born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and grew up throughout Northwest Florida, spending most of her childhood in a trailer park there. At the age of 15, she was spotted by Mary Lou Nash, owner and operator of Mary Lou's Models, a modeling agency. Nash saw Murphy's potential and soon she was modeling in local ads and magazines throughout Florida and Alabama. After she graduated from Choctawhatchee Senior High School, Murphy moved to Milan to further her modeling career. Her career kicked into high-gear when she bleached her hair platinum blonde for a photo shoot, ruining her hair and causing it to fall out.
Because of this she had to get a short hair cut which made her popular with many top photographers and soon she was in major magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Vogue and was named VH1/Vogue's "Model of the Year" at the 1998 Fashion Awards. Murphy is featured on the cover of the 2005 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, as well as the 1999 cover of Vogue's "Models of the Millennium." She has also posed for the 2002 Playboy calendar. She is currently the face of Estée Lauder, replacing Elizabeth Hurley as the company's primary female spokesmodel. She also started an acting career with the role of "Dubbie the Blonde" in Barry Levinson's Liberty Heights in 1999. She also attended St. Mary's Catholic school in Fort Walton Beach, Florida from kindergarten to 8th grade.
In July 2007, earning at an estimated total of $5 million in the past 12 months, Forbes magazine named her sixth in the list of the World's 15 Top-Earning Supermodels. As of 2007, she is still one of the industries most in demand and successful models, she shot fall campaigns for, 7 for all Mankind, Anne Klein, Lord & Taylor, Estee Lauder, and Tiffany & Co. Murphy was asked to pose as Grace Kelly for Town & Country's November 2007 'A Tribute to Grace Kelly' issue due to her striking resemblance to the fashion icon.
She previously dated model Mark Vanderloo. In 1999, Murphy married surf shop owner Jake Schroeder, whom she met while on vacation. She gave birth to their daughter, Dylan Blue, on December 28, 2000, and the three posed for Vogue as Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and Frances Bean Cobain. Murphy and Schroeder divorced in 2002. Since then she has dated Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd. She and Boyd reportedly split in August 2005.
