Biography Amanda Tapping Biography

Amanda Tapping (born 28 August 1965) is an English-born Canadian actress. Born in Rochford, Essex in England, she moved with her family to Ontario, Canada when she was three years old. She attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute where she excelled in environmental science and drama. However, when she finished in 1984, she decided to focus her attention on drama when she attended the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Windsor, Ontario.

Amanda Tapping is probably best known for her role in the MGM sci-fi television series Stargate SG-1 as Captain Major Colonel Samantha Carter. Born in Rochford, Essex in England on August 28, she spent a short time in South Benfleet, Essex, was relocated to Ontario, Canada, at the age of 3. Amanda's natural hair colour is blonde and she is 5' 9'' (175 cm) tall. Amanda is married to Mr. Alan Kovacs. She has two brothers (Richard and Christopher). Amanda has a dog named Abbie. On March 22, 2005 (Tuesday at 6:29pm) Amanda's daughter, whom Amanda and Alan named Olivia B, was born.

Since she can remember, she says, her parents have always begged her to go into science. At the same time, according to her mother, she always wanted to be an actress. She excelled in math when she was younger but then began attending a high school and became more interested in arts. At high school (North Toronto High) she won the Dramatic Arts Award and Environmental Science Award. She says, "I always had this sort of inkling I'd like to be a doctor when I was younger, and then, of course, like everyone else, wanted to be a marine biologist, but acting was always in the forefront." As a child, Amanda liked to watch Little House on a Prairie and also, with her mother, Coronation Street. She confesses she got totally hooked on it during her university days and she would love to have a guest appearance on the series. Her father was a huge Monty Python fan.

After graduation Tapping continued to study theatrical arts while performing in several stage productions. She appeared in several television commercials and played a variety of roles in television and film productions, such as The Outer Limits and The X-Files. She also formed a comedy troupe, the "Random Acts", with collaborators Katherine Jackson and Anne Marie Kerr, in Toronto in the early 90s.

Amanda's well-known for excellent portrayal of strong female characters. She has expressed her views on her strong female Stargate SG-1 character and on the strength of women in today's world on many occasions. She counts one of her own heroes feminist author Gloria Steinem. She says, "The last time I heard her speak, it was all about doing it yourself. We can sit here in this society and say, 'People treating us this way is wrong.' But so much of the responsibility is on us to make it right. That's a huge amount of pressure for women, but it's also the way it has to be. We're always going to run across bigots in this world and we're always going to run across misogynists who are threatened by female power, but I think if I were to describe myself in pure feminist forms, I would say I want equality. We want respect not because we're women, but simply because we're human beings. I feel very strongly about equality and I also feel, as Steinem said, we have to take responsibility for ourselves."

Nowadays, Amanda has gone beyond being only an actor: she produces her own (and stars in it), immensely innovative, fantasy / science fiction series Sanctuary, created using the new computer generated image technology and is very passionate about developing that project. We wish her all the best in all of her endeavours and hope to see more and more creative piece of works to reach our television screens or cinemas in years to come.

Tapping is best known for her portrayal of Samantha Carter in the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1, which debuted in 1997. Tapping took the place of Torri Higginson in season four of Stargate Atlantis as the Atlantis expedition commander. In season five, however, Tapping's role on the show will be reduced to that of "special guest-star" with only occasional appearances.. Instead of returning for Atlantis' 5th season Amanda chose to focus her attention on the development of a new series for the SCI FI Channel, "Sanctuary For All" for which she serves as both star and Executive Producer, which follows on from "Sanctuary", a show released on the internet in 2007 as a series of eight "webisodes", where the bulk of the scenery and characters are entirely green-screen and cgi creations.

As of 2004, Amanda lives with her husband, Alan Kovacs, in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has one daughter, Olivia B., born on March 22, 2005. Tapping had three brothers, Richard, Christopher and Steven. Chris is a fraternal twin, who works in Toronto as a database administrator. Tapping's brother Steven died in December 2006.
