Wentworth Earl Miller III (born June 2, 1972) is a Golden Globe-nominated American actor. He rose to stardom following his starring role as Michael Scofield in the Fox Network television series Prison Break. Every once and a while, an actor appears in a role that seems tailor-made. For Wentworth Miller, that role came when he was cast as young Coleman Silk in “The Human Stain” (2003), a race drama about a man (the older version played by Sir Anthony Hopkins) hiding the true nature of his identity one born from a white mother and black father. Miller’s own background was a mirror image of the character, which naturally gave him an edge on the competition despite his sparse resume. Prior to his feature debut, Miller paid his dues in small unforgiving roles on various television shows. Eventually, Miller began appearing in more prominent parts, including the lead role on the escape drama, “Prison Break” (2005- ), an action-packed series that had set him up to become a breakthrough star. Miller was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, the son of Joy Marie (née Palm), a special education teacher, and Wentworth Earl Miller II, a lawyer and teacher. Miller has stated that his father is of African-American, Jamaican, English, German, Jewish and Cherokee ancestry, and that his mother is of Russian, French, Dutch, Lebanese and Syrian descent. Miller's father, a Rhodes Scholar, was studying at Oxford at the time of Miller's birth. His family moved to Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, when he was one. He has two sisters, Leigh and Gillian. Miller attended Midwood High School in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He was a member of SING!, an annual musical production that was started by Midwood. He graduated from Princeton University with a degree in English Literature. While at Princeton, he performed with the a cappella group the Princeton Tigertones. Miller began his career in the industry on the other side of the camera. After graduating from college with a degree in English Literature, Miller headed to Los Angeles in the spring of 1995 to work in the development department of a small production company specializing in movies made for television. However, it wasn't long before his desire to realize the acting ambitions of his childhood became undeniable. Within the next few years, he landed guest spots on a variety of shows including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), "ER" (1994) and "Popular" (1999). He also starred in the Hallmark "mega-series" "Dinotopia" (2002). Miller then segued to The Human Stain (2003), a feature film directed by Robert Benton and starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. A movie examining questions of race, class and identity, it featured Hopkins as an embattled college professor struggling to conceal an incredible secret, with Miller playing the same character as a young man. Miller subsequently appeared in the movie Underworld (1999) and guest-starred on "Joan of Arcadia" (2003) and "Ghost Whisperer" (2005) before joining the cast of "Prison Break" (2005), a groundbreaking television series that's quickly become an international phenomenon. Playing a structural engineer who gets himself thrown into the same prison where his brother is on death row in order to break his brother out, Miller was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama in 2006. In 1995, he went to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Miller's first starring role was as the sensitive and introverted David in ABC's mini-series Dinotopia. After appearing in a few minor television roles, he moved on to co-star in the 2003 film The Human Stain, playing the younger version of the Anthony Hopkins character, Coleman Silk. Miller's first TV appearance was as student-turned-sea monster Gage Petronzi on Buffy the Vampire Slayer ("Go Fish", 1998). In 2005, Miller was cast as Michael Scofield in Fox Network's television drama Prison Break. He plays the role of a caring brother who created an elaborate scheme to help his brother, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) escape death row after being found guilty of a crime he did not commit. His performance in the show earned him a 2005 Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series. Graduated from Princeton with a degree in English. Miller's father is African-American, Somalian, Jamaican, British, German and part Cherokee; his mother is Russian, French, Syrian, and Lebanese. He is a 1990 graduate of Quaker Valley High, Miller moved to Sewickley Heights for his senior year of high school with his father, Wentworth Earl Miller II. His mother, Roxann, is a Special Education Teacher and a graduate from Yale. His father, Wentworth Earl Miller II is a Lawyer and a graduate of Yale. He has 2 younger sisters, Gillian and Leigh, who is the youngest. Gillian is a Lawyer and Leigh is in Law School. A snippet of Wentworth's guest star role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), "Go Fish" Season 2, (Episode 20: 5 May 1998), is used in the montage of images in the opening credits for the third season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997). After a couple of episodes on “Joan of Arcadia” (2003-2005), he gave his best HAL impression in the big budget bomb, “Stealth” (2005), voicing EDI, the onboard computer of a runaway aerial combat plane equipped with nuclear weapons and artificial intelligence gone haywire. Miller then landed the role of Michael Scofield on the Fox series, “Prison Break,” playing a structural engineer who robs a bank in order to get arrested and placed in the same prison as his brother (Dominic Purcell), a wrongly-accused death row inmate. Despite criticism for stretching the boundaries of plausibility, the show was hailed for its suspense and excitement. The show made an impressive debut, pulling 10.5 million viewers its first night and holding 8.5 million its second episode. Meanwhile, he appeared in the pilot episode of “The Ghost Whisperer” (CBS, 2005), which was set to air late September. He is allergic to cats and dogs as well as certain foods. His tattoos for the show "Prison Break" (2005) are a 4 hour make-up process. According to the special features on the "Prison Break" (2005) DVD, he auditioned for Superman Clark Kent when the project was still in Brett Ratner's hands. In 2007 Was one of People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People in the world. Miller appeared in two Mariah Carey music videos, "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together" as a party guest. Director Brett Ratner, who directed the pilot episode of Prison Break, was signed on to also direct the two Mariah Carey videos. Ratner brought up the idea to Mariah about using Miller in the videos. After showing her Miller's picture, she agreed to use him. Since both the videos and the pilot episode of Prison Break were being filmed at the same time, a special set was constructed on the set of the Mariah Carey videos, so that Miller would be able to work simultaneously on both projects. He says, "Mariah's an international icon. The two days I spent working on her video did more for my career, gave me more exposure, than anything I'd done before Prison Break. I'm grateful for the opportunity." |
