Ville Hermanni Valo (born November 22, 1976), is a Finnish singer, songwriter and frontman of the Finnish rock band HIM. They have released six studio albums and four compilation albums. They became the first Finnish rock band to achieve a gold record in the United States. Valo was also the drummer for the spin-off rock band Daniel Lioneye which featured their guitarist on vocals. Valo is friends with American actor/pro-skateboarder Bam Margera, and HIM's music has been featured in Margera's projects. Soon after his birth, the family moved to the riverside community of Oulunkylä, where they lived through his teenage years. As a child, Valo was influenced by his music-loving parents, who exposed him to the songs of popular Finnish performers such as Tapio Rautavaara and Rauli Badding Somerjoki, while an older cousin introduced him to the heavier sounds of bands like Kiss, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Valo's first musical step was as a three year old bongo drummer. He is the vocalist, songwriter and frontman of the Finnish band HIM. Valo is one of the founding members of HIM, a band that have gone on to enjoy success across Europe and the US. He currently lives in Finland and is known to be friends with skateboarder and 'Jackass', Bam Margera, Valo also appeared in Bam's MTV show Viva la Bam. The somber and often introverted Valo has drawn comparisons to late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison of The Doors (whom Ville played in The 69 Eyes video 'Wasting The Dawn'). Ville Valo's first musical step was as a three year old bongo drummer. Aged nine, Valo attended the Pop and Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki, where he studied several different musical genres. Soon after his birth his family moved to the riverside community of Oulunkylä, where his father eventually opened a sex shop; during his late teens Ville spent a period working in the shop before launching his career in music. As a child he was influenced by his music-loving parents, who exposed him to the songs of popular Finnish performers such as Tapio Rautavaara and Rauli Badding Somerjoki, while an older cousin introduced him to the heavier sounds of bands like Kiss, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. His interests gradually expanded to include reggae, early blues and country-oriented material such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Neil Young. From a young age, Valo's enthusiasm for music also took a more active form of expression, and he participated in a large number of different Helsinki-based bands: B.L.O.O.D. (1986-89), Eloveena Boys (1987-88), Kemoterapia (1989-97) and numerous other, more obscure projects. He started out by playing bass for his band HIM, however he had to sing for their first demo as they couldn't find a vocalist. He then became full-time vocalist for them. He also plays drums and guitar on some of HIM's songs. Lead singer of HIM. Good friend of Bam Margera. He has a younger brother, Jesse, who is 8 years younger than him. Valo means light in Finnish His favorite movie is The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). He is half Hungerian on his mother's side. His idols include Clint Eastwood, Gene Simmons and Edgar Allan Poe. Engaged to Jonna Nygren as of 9th of July 2005. The pair have since split in March 2006. Duetted with Natalia Avelon for a remake of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Summer Wine" on the soundtrack of Wilde Leben, Das (2007), reaching #2 in the German charts. Before becoming the lead singer of HIM, he had been in the bands Eloveena Boys, Aurora, Charlie Parker, Terapia, Winha, Unga Kaskelottär, Natas, B.L.O.O.D., Kemoterapia and Donits-Osmo. He also played bass, drums and guitar. When Valo cried as an infant his father would play Paratiisi by Rauli Badding Somerjoki, and his mother would take him in her arms and dance. At this, baby Ville would cease to cry. His brother Jesse is a Thai boxer. His father Kari was a taxi driver when Ville was born,but later owned an adult shop. Although suffering from asthma, he smokes about 60 cigarettes a day to keep his husky voice. HIM and other side projects Music:
Ville Valo Tattoos: Ville has several tattoos including a sleeve on his left arm, a heartagram on the back of his neck, he used to have an "S" on the left side of his chest, which he got tattooed in honor of his girlfriend, Susanna. However, it is now covered with a heartagram, along his hip line is a vinal heartagram, the eyes of Edgar Allan Poe on his back with heartagrams in the pupils, portraits of Charles Bukowski, Timo Mukka and Charles Baudelaire on his right arm, Venus Doom inside his right arm, the letter "J" on his ring finger for former fiance Jonna Nygren which he is getting removed, and a heart, the letters "D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F., and words "When I love..I love" on his wrist. Close friend Bam Margera shares many of these. MAY written over his heart, and a couple on his legs from the folder to Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights.
