"As an actor, you want to keep your demons to some extent, but you also have to exorcise them so you can use them instead of them using you. Having people in the business say, You do good work, is part of it, and so is knowing that it's true in my head, that I do good work. I feel like I want to crawl out of my skin, especially when people start questioning me. I think you have to refill the well at some point." |

Brian Ray "Skeet" Ulrich (born January 20, 1970) is an American actor who starred in the CBS drama Jericho that ran from 2006-2008. A strikingly handsome and intense leading man, Skeet Ulrich’s natural talent and depth of character quickly put him on the map of young actors to watch. With chiseled cheekbones and an ardent stare often likened to Johnny Depp, Ulrich made his mark early on as crazed teen killer Billy Loomis in Wes Craven’s “Scream” (1996) and as bank robber Joe Newton in “The Newton Boys” (1998). A former stage actor and member of David Mamet’s Atlantic Theater Company, Ulrich went on to bring depth and acuity to his performances on screen. Taking on the medium of television in 2006, Ulrich landed a starring role in the CBS drama “Jericho.”
Starring in his first series television role in 2003, Ulrich portrayed Paul Callan, an investigator of modern miracles, in the series “Miracles” (ABC, 2003). Though the series revolved around an intriguing premise, it was cancelled after only 13 episodes. Ulrich went on to star in the television movie “The Magic of Ordinary Days” (2005) opposite Kerri Russell and in the highly touted ensemble TNT mini-series, “Into the West” (2005). Returning to series television in 2006, Ulrich landed the lead role on the CBS series “Jericho,” portraying a man who returns to his hometown in Kansas just before it becomes isolated due to a mysterious explosion.
Ulrich was born Brian Ray Trout in Lynchburg, Virginia and was raised in Concord, North Carolina by his mother, Carolyn Elaine Wax (née Rudd), who owns the special-events marketing agency Sports Management Group. Ulrich's father is a restaurateur and his first stepfather was former NASCAR driver and team owner D. K. Ulrich. His mother has since re-married to Edward Lewis Wax. His parents divorced when he was 3, and he told Interview that life was "kinda hectic...My dad has been married a lot." His first nickname was "Skeeter", from a Little League coach who said he was tiny, like a mosquito.
He decided to shorten it to "Skeet" when he saw a TV movie featuring a girl named Skeeter. "I didn't even go to my prom," he told The Record. "I didn't have one date in high school." He told Details, "I scored a 910 on my SAT. I didn't care about education. I don't know what I cared about." He lost a bid for a college scholarship when he punched out a rival soccer player in high school. "As an actor, I think you want to keep your demons," he told Interview. Once he interrupted an interview with Details by peeing on the side of a building, in front of the writer. He has a long scar on his chest from open-heart surgery done when he was 10 to correct a ventricle defect. "As a kid I used to pretend I was like John Denver, of all people, and play the guitar and sing, 'Take Me Home, Country Roads,' he told Interview.
Ulrich's uncle is NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver Ricky Rudd (who is his mother's brother) and his maternal grandfather was Alvin Ray Rudd, Sr., the president of Al Rudd Auto Parts. The nickname "Skeet" originated from the nickname "Skeeter" he was given by his Little League coach because of his small stature. Along with his slight frame he had poor health, including numerous bouts with pneumonia, and underwent open heart surgery at the age of 10.
Ulrich graduated from Northwest Cabarrus High School, where he was a soccer standout. After initially enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to study Marine Biology, he switched to New York University, and was subsequently noticed by playwright David Mamet.
Former student at New York University where he studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company, a New York off-broadway theater company founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy. Has a scar on his chest from open heart surgery when he was ten years old to correct a ventricular septal defect. Studied marine biology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Is the nephew of successful NASCAR driver Ricky Rudd. Has twins: a son, Jakob Dylan, and a daughter, Naiia Rose, born on 9 March 2001. Raised in Concord, North Carolina. His stepfather D.K. Ulrich and uncle Ricky Rudd are both NASCAR drivers. As a teen, he briefly worked on his stepfather's Winston Cup team.
In his earliest screen appearance was an uncredited extra in films Weekend at Bernie's and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. After joining the Atlantic Theater Company as an apprentice, Ulrich performed with the group, which got him noticed yet again, this time by director Stacy Cochran. She cast him in a CBS School Break Special. With her help he also received his first notable role on screen in 1996 as the loutish boyfriend of Winona Ryder in Boys. That same year he appeared in The Craft with Neve Campbell. He starred with Neve Campbell again in Wes Craven's hit slasher film Scream released later that same year which became his best known role. In 1998 he starred in The Newton Boys.
Ulrich starred alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. in the action film Chill Factor. He had a small but pivotal role as an emotionally conflicted homosexual hustler in As Good as It Gets. He starred as Juvenal, a young man with stigmata and healing powers in the film Touch, and he appeared in Ride with the Devil, an American Civil War drama directed by Ang Lee. In 2000, he played computer hacker Kevin Mitnick in the film Takedown.
On television, Ulrich starred in the short-lived ABC series Miracles, and appeared in TNT's multiple Emmy-nominated miniseries, Into the West. In 2005, Ulrich acted with Keri Russell in the TV movie The Magic of Ordinary Days. Ulrich most recently starred as Jake Green on the CBS post-apocalyptic drama Jericho, which premiered on September 20, 2006, and ended its run on March 25, 2008.
Skeet dated actress Leonora Scelfo, from 1995-1997. Then in early 1997, Ulrich married English actress Georgina Cates, whom he met at an Academy Award party. Their wedding was a small ceremony held on their farmland in Virginia, with the only guests being the preacher and their canine companions. They have twins: a son Jakob Dylan, and a daughter, Naiia Rose, born in March 9, 2001. Skeet and Georgina divorced in 2005 citing irreconcilable differences. They share joint custody of their children.
