"I want to live up to that expectation. It keeps me on my toes, hopefully, I earned it. The producers wanted a very specific accent. I did an Indian accent, and I listened to tapes to develop it. Then they came back and said the guy was educated in English, so it should be a British accent, with a lilt of Indian. My accent changes throughout the pilot a bit, because then they wanted it to be predominantly English." |

Sendhil Ramamurthy (born May 17, 1974) is an American actor, born in Chicago, Illinois but raised in San Antonio, Texas. He is perhaps best known for the role he plays as Indian geneticist Mohinder Suresh in the NBC drama Heroes. One of prime time television’s few actors of Indian descent, Sendhil Ramamurthy built his career on defying stereotypes. A so-called “accidental actor,” Ramamurthy got bitten by the bug fairly late in life at the ripe old age of 22. A conscious vow never to audition for stereotypical Indian roles limited Ramamurthy’s employment opportunities early on, but his integrity paid off within a few years. After a string of notable television guest starring roles on such high-profile hits as “Grey’s Anatomy” (2005- ) and the British actioner, “Ultimate Force” (2002-06), Ramamurthy finally got his big break in 2006 when he landed the coveted role of Dr. Mohinder Suresh, one of the principle characters on the high-flying hit adventure serial, “Heroes” (2006- ).
He was born in the US to Indian Tamil parents, both of whom are physicians. His parents are from Bangalore, India. He has one sister, who is a physician, doing a residency in a combined internal medicine and psychiatry residency program. He and his sister were raised in San Antonio. In San Antonio, he went to Keystone School and graduated from there in 1991. He is cousin of film director Jay Chandrasekhar He is married to actress Olga Sosnovska; they have one daughter, Halina. His family comes from Tamil Nadu, India. Graduated from Tufts University in 1996. He is a brother of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He attended the Kappa charge (Tufts). Studied drama in England and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company before moving back to the states. Attended Keystone School in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated in 1991.
Ramamurthy attended Tufts University initially as a pre-med major to follow in his parents' footsteps. He was also a member of the Kappa Charge of Theta Delta Chi. He then became interested in acting when he took an "Intro to Acting" class during his junior year as part of his graduation requirement. After participating in several plays including Our Country's Good, he chose to change career goals. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and then attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, from which he graduated in 1999. After graduating from Tufts in 1996 with a degree in history, Ramamurthy moved to England.
There, he continued his studies at London’s prestigious Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. Breaking into television in the early new millennium, Ramamurthy’s first major guest-starring role on the long–running medical drama “Casualty” (1986- ) led to a three-episode stint as Corporal Alex Leonard on the military adventure series, “Ultimate Force.” In 2002, Ramamurthy landed his first American role as Alexandra Spaulding’s suave manservant, Lloyd, on the long-running daytime drama, “Guiding Light” (1952- ). While the part was relatively small, Ramamurthy’s exotic good looks, aristocratic bearing, and smooth accent were enough to catch the attention of other casting directors. Within a year, Ramamurthy had graduated to small roles on bigger shows – most notably the hit drama "Grey's Anatomy” and the cerebral police procedural, “Numb3rs” (2005- ).
Ramamurthy has appeared in theatrical productions of A Servant of Two Masters in London's West End, Indian Ink at the Soho Repertory Theatre, and East Is East at the Manhattan Theatre Club. His film credits include Thanks to Gravity, Orient Express and Little India. In addition, he has appeared on several TV shows, including Ellen, Casualty, Guiding Light, Ultimate Force, Grey's Anatomy, and Numb3rs. It was Ramamurthy’s debut in the hottest new show of 2006, however, that truly signed his meal ticket. Auditioning for the role of brilliant geneticist, Dr. Mohinder Suresh on “Heroes,” Ramamurthy went in with little expectations.
Originally written for a middle-aged actor, the role of Dr. Suresh bore little resemblance to what it eventually became. As Ramamurthy recalled, “I thought it was a mistake. I left the audition, went outside, and called my agent. I said, 'There are a bunch of older guys here, and me. I know you haven't seen me in awhile but come on! I haven't gotten that old!'” As it turned out, Ramamurthy had little to worry about. “Heroes” creator Tim Kring was so impressed by Ramamurthy’s audition that he actually went back and rewrote the entire pilot, changing the character’s age and adjusting the back-story to make Mohinder Suresh the son of the original geneticist.
Ramamurthy enjoys playing soccer. Ramamurthy made a conscious decision to not audition for stereotypical Indian roles, although he has been offered such parts. Ramamurthy's current role on Heroes is his biggest role yet. Although the character of Mohinder Suresh was originally written for a 55-year old, his audition tape and screen test were convincing enough for writers to rewrite the part for Ramamurthy.
Ramamurthy appeared as the second guest on NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno on January 25, 2007. During the interview he shared about his vacation to the Sistine Chapel, in the Vatican City, where a couple of German tourists wanted to take his picture, in spite of the strict "No Pictures" policy.
