Famous Quote

"Trying to understand women is a tall order period. I was never really comfortable doing comedy. Though it was good the first couple of years, there were problems, and it became a stifling experience. I was happy it ended. There have been times I almost got a persecution complex. I felt like people wouldn't let me grow up. They always saw me as a smiling kid or goofy teenager, no matter how much I'd changed."

Biography Ricky Schroder Biography

Richard Bartlett “Ricky” Schroder, Jr. (born April 13, 1970) is a Golden Globe Award-winning American actor who began his career as a child. Child star. Teen heartthrob. Dramatic actor. Award-winning director. During his Hollywood career, Rick Schroder wore many hats during his successful ascension from child star to critically acclaimed adult actor. To many people, however, he would always be “little Ricky Schroder,” the angelic kid who made strong men cry as T.J. Flynn, Jon Voight’s son in “The Champ” (1979) – to say nothing of Ricky Stratton the “Richie Rich” type lead of the ‘80s family sitcom, “Silver Spoons” (1982-87).

But as time went by, Schroder came back to prominence, nearly unrecognizable as the gruff partner to Dennis Franz on “NYPD Blue” (ABC, 1993-2005). At first, viewers scoffed at his “Silver Spoons” past, but Schroder quickly wowed critics and won over audiences, proving himself a worthy replacement for the recently replaced and beloved Jimmy Smits. Schroder, who continued to excel in dramatic parts, earned the very adult role of CTU Operative Mike Doyle on the thrilling and dramatic FOX series “24” (2001– ), and as Major Bill Keane MD in The Andromeda Strain (2008 miniseries).

Schroder was born in Staten Island, New York, the son of Diane, a telephone company employee, and Richard Bartlett Schroder, Sr., a telephone company district manager. He has a sister, Dawn. Schroder debuted in the 1979 remake of the movie The Champ, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best New Male Star of the Year in a Motion Picture at the age of nine. In the following year, he made a Walt Disney feature film called The Last Flight of Noah's Ark with Elliott Gould. Although Schroder’s performance is generally recognized as good, the film bombed at the box office.

He also starred as the title character in the film Little Lord Fauntleroy alongside Alec Guinness in 1980. He became well-known as the star of the television series Silver Spoons, when he played the lead character Ricky Stratton. After Silver Spoons ended, he attended Calabasas High School for his senior year. As he grew older, he struggled to become known as a serious actor. He changed his name credit from Ricky to Rick and preferred to take roles which helped him to stretch as an actor. Schroder was ranked #18 in VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Kid Stars and #33 in VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Teen Stars.

Schroder’s co-starring role in the Western mini-series Lonesome Dove and its sequel, Return to Lonesome Dove, helped Schroder’s attempt to be recognised as a mature actor. He had a three-year role in the television series NYPD Blue as Det. Danny Sorenson, a cop with a troubled past. He left the series to live full-time on his family’s ranch in Colorado. This ranch has since been put on the market and has apparently sold. He commuted to the set of Strong Medicine, whose cast he joined for a two-year contract starting in 2005, and appeared in films even as he built a log cabin on his ranch. Schroder also appeared in several episodes of the second season of the comedy series Scrubs as nurse Paul Flowers.

In 2004, Schroder directed and starred in the music video for “Whiskey Lullaby”, a song by Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss. This music video won the Country Music Association Music Video Of The Year. In 2007, Schroder took a role as a recurring character on Season 6 of the FOX show 24 as CTU agent Mike Doyle. Schroder is currently filming an independent motion picture in the Shelby area (near Charlotte) of North Carolina. The film's title is "Blood Done Sign My Name" and it is based on the true book of the same name. Schroder landed his next notable role on Lifetime medical series, “Strong Medicine” (2000 –).

Playing Dr. Dylan West during the 2005–06 season, he once again found himself an object of desire by its strongly female demographic. Women just could not get enough of the actor, whose posters and pin-ups once filled their bedroom walls as teenagers themselves. Knocking another one out of the park, Schroder joined the cast of one of the new millennium’s hottest television shows, “24” in early 2007. Portraying CTU Operative Mike Doyle, Schroder teamed up with Kiefer Sutherland’s iconic hero, Jack Bauer for another thrilling, action-packed season. Creators of the FOX show promised that they would pull out all the stops in the new season. Casting Schroder already proved to fans of the actor and the hit show, that the powers-that-be were moving in the right direction. With a career spanning over 20 years, Schroder had consistently stolen and broken hearts, making fans fall in love with him over and over again.

In 1987, Rick Schroder was originally cast to play Todd Bowden in Apt Pupil (1998). This first attempt to film this story ran over budget and stopped production. It was to co-star Nicol Williamson, and it was to be directed by Alan Bridges. Listed (as Ricky Schroder) as one of twelve Promising New Actors of 1979 in "John Willis's Screen World," Vol. 31. Spoke at the Republican National Convention in honor of George W. Bush in 2000. Member of the N.R.A.

Schroder was absent from "NYPD Blue" (1993)'s May 2001 season finale and later announced he would not return to the show because he wanted to devote time to his growing family: his fourth child was due that August. Daughter, Faith Anne, born in Arizona. August 8, 2001. Son Holden is named after actor William Holden with whom Rick co-starred in The Earthling (1980). Children with Andrea Bernard: sons Holden (b. 1992) and Luke (b. 1993) daughters Cambrie (b. 1997), and Faith Anne (b. August 8, 2001).

He and his wife built and designed their Colorado ranch in the summer of 1998. Older sister, Dawn Schroder, has done some modeling and acting. Played Jon Voight's son twice: the first time in The Champ (1979) and the second time in "Return to Lonesome Dove" (1993). Ranked #20 in TV Guide's list of TV's 25 Greatest Teen Idols (23 January 2005 issue). Won Director of the year at the 2005 CMT Video awards for "Whisky Lullaby". Shares birthday with Ron Perlman they co-starred in I Woke Up Early the Day I Died (1998). Ranked #18 in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Kid Stars. Won the Best Music Video award at the Nashville Film Festival in 2005 for the video "Whiskey Lullaby."

Schroder lives in Topanga Canyon, California, with his wife, Andrea Bernard. The couple has four children: Holden Richard, Luke William, Cambrie, and Faith Anne. He is a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Schroder made an appearance on stage at the 2000 Republican National Convention, endorsing Presidential candidate George W. Bush. He is also a member of the National Rifle Association. Schroder has been playing chess since he was seven years old and revealed that he and Kiefer Sutherland play chess on the set of 24. On the January 9, 2007 edition of CNN’s Larry King Live, Schroder announced he was changing his stage name back to Ricky.
