"People don't really want to know what happens. They ask you for just a second, but then they don't want to know. We weren't sure if we would succeed or not. But we were proud of the show and we were definitely making television that other people weren't. There's something cool about an being an actor when you're a regular as opposed to being a guest star, for example, because you can settle in and kind of enjoy and play at what you do." |

Jorge Garcia (born April 28, 1973) is a Latino-American comedian and actor. He first came to public attention with his performance as Hector Lopez on the show Becker, and currently stars as Hugo "Hurley" Reyes in the American television series Lost. García also performs as a stand-up comic. Jorge Garcia’s massive physical presence set him apart from many of his inexplicably well-manicured castmates on “Lost” (ABC, 2004- ), but never prevented him from becoming a fan favorite. Although best-known for his comedic talents which were frequently on displayed on the popular adventure drama, the role also gave him an opportunity to showcase his more vulnerable side.
García was born in Omaha, Nebraska to a Chilean father and Cuban mother. He grew up in Southern California and went to San Clemente High School. As a senior, he was selected by the faculty as "Triton of the Year", the highest award given to a graduating senior. Garcia, whose heritage was Chilean, was born in Omaha, NE to parents Dora and Humberto. His family moved to San Juan Capistrano, CA, when Garcia was three. He competed on the wrestling team at San Clemente High School before graduating and earning a communications degree from UCLA. Although he joined the Beverly Hills Playhouse after graduation, taking his first steps toward acting and/or stand-up comedy as a career path – Garcia was originally interested in working on the other side of the camera.
He was a prominent character in Troma Studio's film, Tales from the Crapper, in which he portrayed a raccoon-headed young man who is unlucky in love. A 2001 guest spot on “Spin City” (ABC, 1996-2002) was his first significant role. Similar (and smaller) roles in commercials and stage performances followed, before Garcia appeared in an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (HBO, 2000- ), as well as landing a role as a recurring character on “Becker” (CBS, 1998-2004).
Although his tenure on “Becker” was a far longer and dependable gig, it was the appearance as a drug dealer on “Curb” that brought Garcia to the attention of the producers of “Lost.” Before being stranded on the island, however, Garcia found time to appear in a bizarre (but typical, given the company’s history) role in a Troma Films movie entitled “Tales from the Crapper” (2004), in which he played a hapless man with a raccoon head. Garcia was the first actor to be cast on Lost. The producers saw him on Curb Your Enthusiasm the night before casting began, and created the character of Hugo Reyes specifically for him. Garcia had to miss his sister's wedding back on the mainland because he was shooting scenes for the series in Hawaii.
García appeared in the second episode of the eighth season of Celebrity Poker Showdown. He went on to lose to Michael Ian Black. He was a contestant on an episode of Russian Roulette on Game Show Network. He missed a question about the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 and fell through the trap door. Garcia’s next role was by far his biggest to date – as part of the large ethnically diverse cast of “Lost.” His portrayal of Hugo “Hurley” Reyes provided much of the comic relief for ABC’s smash hit, endearing him to fans who craved a momentary respite from the show’s intensity. The writers embraced Hurley during the second season, providing him with much greater depth in which a history of mental illness was revealed. He also developed much deeper personal – even, romantic – relationships with other survivors of the crash.
He has been a guest multiple times on Jay and Jack's popular Lost Podcast and Ramblecast, and he participated in their live 25 hour podcast on March 15, 2008 which raised money for autism awareness. He had to miss his sister's wedding back on the mainland because he was shooting "Lost" over in Hawaii.
Besides his success as an actor, Jorge has been fairly successful as a stand-up comedian. He is well-known among friends for his enormous record collection. Owns a dachshund-Chihuahua mix named Nunu. Is of Cuban and Chilean descent. The first actor to be cast on "Lost." In an interview given to Entertainment Weekly, Jorge says that he was invited to audition for "Lost" because someone involved with the show remembered his performance as a drug dealer on "Curb Your Enthusiasm.". Sings in Matthew Fox's band 'Lost Souls', they perform together at the airing of a new episode of Lost. Was in the High School Wrestling team. His nickname was the Baby Face Assassin.
