"I'm from Melbourne, it's a city of about 3 million, but when you're growing up in a place like that and you think it's quite a big city, and then you travel around and you go, So when I go back now, Melbourne feels like a country town. Mum decided that I could sing a bit, so she put me in a choir, which I hated and it was just a nightmare. I was a rebellious sort of choirboy." |

Jesse Gordon Spencer (born 12 February 1979) is an Australian actor. Jesse Spencer was one of the lucky few Aussies to make a name for himself, most especially with his role on the popular TV medical drama “House M.D.” (Fox, 2004- ). As intensive care specialist Dr. Robert Chase, Spencer offered both “eye candy” for the casual viewer, and a intriguingly layered character that he embodied with ease for the more diehard fans of the show.
Jesse Spencer was born in Melbourne, Australia. He has two brothers, Tarney (an oculo-plastic surgeon) and Luke (an orthopaedic surgeon), and a sister, Polly (currently an intern in medicine). His father, Rodney Spencer, is a general practitioner, who along with his wife, Robyn, founded the anti-immigration political party, Australians Against Further Immigration.
Spencer attended Canterbury Primary School, Malvern Central School and Scotch College. Whilst at Scotch he auditioned for the long-running soap opera, Neighbours. He continued to work toward his VCE qualification whilst working on the show and graduated in 1997. He has also revealed in a magazine interview that he was once roommates with James McAvoy when he was living in London in his early twenties.
Spencer is well known in Australia and the UK as Billy Kennedy in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, a role he played for six years from 1994 to 2000. He has since appeared in the drama Death in Holy Orders, as well as the films, Uptown Girls and Swimming Upstream.
He is now based in the United States playing the role of Dr. Robert Chase in House, alongside Hugh Laurie in the title role. He also co-starred with then-fiancée Jennifer Morrison in the film Flourish. In 2004, Spencer signed on as Dr. Chase on “House M.D.” The role was an intriguing and layered one, with Chase being a child of privilege whose famous doctor father abandoned his family while the character was a teenager, leaving him to contend with an alcoholic mother.
Chase was perhaps the closest in regards to personality to Hugh Laurie’s lead character of House both possessing a streak of self-centeredness and a willingness to fly against the norm of medical diagnosis to heal a patient. He was also more than happy to sit back and enjoy the drubbing his colleagues endured from House. In the show’s second season, however, things got heated between the show’s two male leads when Chase regularly leaked information about House and his team to Edward Vogler (Chi McBride), a wealthy businessman who had bought his way onto the hospital board. The resulting rift between House and Chase appeared to have been resolved; indeed, viewers were left with the impression that the older doc found the gall of his younger colleague somewhat impressive.
Spencer received a "Golden Boomerang" Award by Australians in Film at the 2nd Australians in Film Breakthrough Awards on 11 May 2006, for his work on House, alongside Jacinda Barrett, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. In 2007, he was included in People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People issue.
As of 2008, he plays violin in Band From TV, a music group who were formed by Greg Grunberg. They play various events, putting the proceeds into the different charities that each member supports.
Spencer became engaged to House co-star Jennifer Morrison on 23 December 2006, after proposing in Paris. According to an interview with Spencer and Morrison in InStyle Weddings, the couple met in March 2004 at Vancouver International Airport where they were on their way to film the first episode of House before they began dating in July 2004. Morrison and Spencer also revealed that they were to marry on a private estate in Los Angeles later in 2007. However, in August 2007, the couple announced that they had called off their engagement.
Has two older brothers and a younger sister. He was in the Australian boys choir. Has played the violin since the age of 10. Plays the guitar, bass and the piano. Unveiled an Uptown Girls (2003) window display in New York with co-stars Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning. Just like his characters Billy Kennedy ("Neighbours" (1985)) and Robert Chase ("House M.D." (2004)), his real-life father and brothers are all doctors.
Sang the song "Molly Smiles" on the Uptown Girls (2003) soundtrack. was engaged to "House M.D." co-star Jennifer Morrison. Is fluent in French. Former room-mate of James McAvoy when he lived in London. The latter invited him to the Los Angeles' premiere of The Last King of Scotland (2006). In 2007 People's 100 Most Beautiful People issue.
Spencer has played the violin since the age of ten and also plays the guitar and piano. He is also a fan of Battlestar Galactica, according to a magazine interview. He also loves surfing with his brothers and sister around Torquay, Jan Juc and Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia.
