Jay Karnes (born June 27, 1963) is an American actor, born in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended the University of Kansas (class of '89). He is well known for his current role as L.A.P.D. Det. Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach on the FX hit drama The Shield, which in 2008 will be in its seventh season.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Karnes planned on being a lawyer when he grew up. He attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence majoring in Political Science. The summer of his senior year, as he began studying for the LSAT in preparation for law school, he decided to audition for the Nebraska Shakespeare Festival.
Karnes was cast in "A Midsummer Nights Dream", and "Hamlet". It was his first paid acting job. He then shelved his law school plans and turned his focus and sights on the theatre.
Producer Joe Stern (Law & Order, Judging Amy) saw Karnes playing Mercutio in a Shakespeare L.A. production of "Romeo & Juliet" and cast him in The Matrix Theatre Company's production of "The Tavern", where he met his future wife, actress Julia Campbell.
After deciding to settle in Los Angeles to be with his wife, Jay began working steadily in film and television. His film work includes playing Martin Landaus son in "The Joyriders", and "The Next Best Thing" playing opposite Rupert Everett and Madonna. Jay has guest starred in numerous television shows including "Judging Amy", "Nash Bridges", "Ally McBeal", "Chicago Hope", "The Pretender", and "Star Trek, Voyager".
He has continued his work with The Matrix Theatre Company in productions of "The Seagull and Dangerous Corner". Jay most recently starred as Stanley Webber in The Matrixs production of Harold Pinters enigmatic "The Birthday Party".
Two of the films he has starred in are The Joyriders (1999) and The Next Best Thing (2000). His most recent films is in the 2008 movies Chasing 3000 and Broken Angel. He guest starred in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Relativity" as Ducane. He is well known for his role on The Shield as Detective Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach. The Shield also stars Benito Martinez and Michael Jace. He guest starred in "Boy Next Door", an episode of Ally McBeal, that also starred the late Roy Brocksmith, Steven Culp, Gina Philips, Kate Asner, and Clyde Kusatsu.
Some of his feature films he starred in include The Joyriders (1999, with Steve Bond and Angela Paton), The Next Best Thing (2000, with John Carroll Lynch, Fran Bennett, and Katelin Petersen), and Chasing 3000 (2006, with Seymour Cassel and Lori Petty).
Jay Karnes has made guest appearances on some tv shows, his appearances range from Frasier, Judging Amy, Chicago Hope, The Pretender and Star Trek: Voyager as Lieutenant Ducane in the fifth-season episode "Relativity."
In the mid-1990s Karnes was a company member with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, playing major roles in such plays as Love's Labours Lost' and 'Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. He is married to actress Julia Campbell, and the couple have twin girls.
