"I can honestly say I had an epiphany at 13 years old, because I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It's so funny, because all of my family members have become celebrities in their neighborhoods, while I live in total anonymity. By the time I was 17, I was on a TV show, doing choreography and dancing, and I was in a theater company. Because I was so busy, I started doing really badly in school, though." |

Freddy Rodriguez (born January 17, 1975) is an American actor known for playing the characters Hector Federico "Rico" Diaz on HBO's Six Feet Under and El Wray in the Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror. Currently, he is a recurring cast member on the series Ugly Betty. Best known for his deft, multifaceted portrayal of the ambitious mortician Frederico Diaz in the dysfunctional family drama "Six Feet Under" (2001-2005), Freddy Rodriguez excelled at playing believable Everyman characters, whether they were written as Latinos or not. Rodriguez had always dreamed of being an actor. His dreams became a reality when the theater trained actor starred in the pilot production of Chicago's Whirlwind Performance Company, a theater company composed of youths at risk. His exceptional work with the group led to a two year scholarship to the summer arts program at the Chicago Center for the Gifted.
Rodriguez was born in Chicago, Illinois to Puerto Rican parents. He is a graduate of Lincoln Park High School in Chicago. Rodriguez is the father of Giancarlo Rodriguez, who played his son Julio on HBO's Six Feet Under. He has a second son, Elijah Rodriguez. He is married to Elsie Rodriguez. Began his acting career at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago, where he appeared in more than a dozen plays, including "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Twelve Angry Men", "The Crucible", "A Midsummers Night's Dream" and "The Lottery.". Is of Puerto Rican descent. He and his wife Elsie were high school sweethearts.
His first recognizable role on film was when he landed the part of Pedro Aragon, Jr. in A Walk in the Clouds with Keanu Reeves and Giancarlo Giannini. Afterwards, Rodriguez went on to film roles such as an obnoxious jock in Can't Hardly Wait. He played a Vietnam veteran in Dead Presidents with Chris Tucker and Larenz Tate and was also seen on Scrubs as Carla's brother Marco. He also played Federico on the HBO series Six Feet Under. As a voice actor, he contributed the voice of Más y Menos on Teen Titans.
He starred in the film Poseidon as a waiter who briefly survives the horrible rogue wave that overcame the ship. He also played a vicious inner city drug dealer named Hector in the 2005 movie, Havoc. In 2006, he played Reggie, a character who only exercised one half of his body, in M. Night Shyamalan's film Lady in the Water. He has recently starred alongside Eva Longoria and Christian Bale in Harsh Times, his first leading character in a major theater release. He was seen on an episode of the hit hospital television show ER, where he played a dying comic inspired by Bill Hicks. He also played a jockey in the movie Dreamer with co-star Dakota Fanning.
Rodriguez next costarred in “Harsh Times” (2006), David Ayer’s compelling tale about violence and loyalty, playing the best friend of a Gulf War veteran (Christian Bale) struggling to cope with postwar life while hoping to make it into the LAPD. The veteran’s dreams of becoming a cop slips away as the two old friends cut through South Central Los Angeles on a rampage that eventually has dire consequences for themselves and their friendship. He then joined a star-studded cast for Emilio Estevez’s long-awaiting docudrama, “Bobby” (2006), a retelling of Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination as seen by those who worked at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in 1968 where he was killed.
After “Bobby” disappeared from theaters with little fanfare, Rodriguez was seen in the Quentin Tarantino-Robert Rodriguez double bill “Grindhouse” (2007), a compilation of two 90-minute horror flicks from both directors that was a throwback to the days of bloody, sex-fueled, low-rent double features that played in seedy 42nd Street theaters in New York City. Rodriguez appeared in Rodriguez’s zombie segment, “Planet Terror,” playing a mysterious loner-drifter type named El Wray who reunites with a former go-go dancer (Rose McGowan) as they represent mankind’s last best hope for survival in a battle with an army of flesh-eating zombies.
He also played busboy José Rojas in the 2006 film Bobby. Most recently, he starred as El Wray in Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez's portion of the double-feature film, Grindhouse. He appeared in the music video for the Santana song "Into the Night" and also made a cameo appearance as a flight attendant in the music video for the song "Glamorous" by Fergie. Most recently, Rodriguez had a very brief cameo appearance in Fall Out Boy's 2008 music video Beat It. He also starred in the popular video game Saints Row as the voice of Angelo Lopez.
On July 13, 2007, Rodriguez was added to the cast of the ABC dramedy series Ugly Betty, in which he plays Giovanni Rossi, a sandwich shop owner who is expected to become a love interest for Betty Suarez (played by America Ferrera). He made his debut on the series at the start of the second season. Rodriguez has also announced on his home office website that he is currently in the works for a film adaptation of the book Bodega Dreams and will star in the film and also serve as executive producer.
