Famous Quote

"It's a heritage; in a cultural, not a religious way. That means knowing the history, knowing the general ideas and why they mean so much to people. Each time I sat down to a table read, I thought the script was fantastic. But from the first time I saw the pilot, I thought, I don't think this is an engaging television show. I think that some of the brilliance of Aaron Sorkin's dialogue can mask maybe some weaknesses. A lot of the show came across as a philosophical debate."

Biography Evan Handler Biography

Evan Handler (born January 10, 1961 in New York City) is an American actor who has appeared in films and television dramas and sitcoms including Six Feet Under, Law & Order, The West Wing, Miami Vice, Sex and the City, and was featured in one episode of Friends, Ed and 24. He was a co-star in the ABC sitcoms It's Like, You Know... and Hot Properties. Handler is also an author. His first book, Time On Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, told the story of his unlikely recovery from Acute myeloid leukemia in his mid-twenties. His second, It's Only Temporary...The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive is due out in 2007.

The bald and slightly diminutive, affable character actor Evan Handler began his career in big-screen features with a handful of memorable portrayals in films such as the military actioner Taps (1981); the gentle, underrated coming-of-age dramedy Sweet Lorraine (1987); and Oliver Stone's gonzo anti-media orgy Natural Born Killers (1994). After 1996, Handler focused almost exclusively on television, with both guest and recurring roles on popular programs (Friends, 24, Lost) and short-lived series (Hot Properties, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip).

He is perhaps best-known for his recurring role on Sex and the City (in seasons five and six) as Charlotte's divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt, who ultimately won her heart and became her husband. In 2007, Handler joined David Duchovny and Natascha McElhone with a regular role as Hank Moody's (Duchovny) agent and best friend, Charlie, on the quirky Showtime series comedy Californication. Handler remains active in the theater; he essayed respectable performances in such New York-based stage productions as I Hate Hamlet (1991), Big Al (1992), and Time on Fire (1993).

Wrote the book "Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors" (about his experience of being a leukemia patient) that was published in 1996 by Little, Brown, and Company. This book is reviewed and written about in great deal in the January, 2003 issue of "The Oprah Magazine" in an article about patient health-care advocacy. Brother of Lowell Handler

Quit the Broadway show "I Hate Hamlet" mid-performance after his co-star Nicol Williamson hit him with a sword and chased him off stage. This situation was used as a plotline in the "NYPD Blue" (1993) episode "Cold Heaters" (Season 3, Episode 8), Dropped out of the Broadway production of "Biloxi Blues" when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was Matthew Broderick's understudy. He also played Harold in the touring company of "Master Harold and the Boys," a role which Broderick played in a television production, and he appeared on "Sex and the City" (1998) with Broderick's wife, Sarah Jessica Parker.

While in his mid-20s and very ill with a likely-fatal type of leukemia, one of the hospital chaplains performed an ancient Jewish ritual on him in which his name was changed to fool the Angel of Death into not knowing who to come for. The name on his new birth certificate was "Chaim".

In an interview on the NPR show "Talk of the Nation," Handler said that during negotiations with various Hollywood studio executives who were interested in optioning Handler's first book, "Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors," to be adapted into a movie, one agent tried to sign Handler by presenting the possibility that the movie might later get turned into a ride at Busch Gardens Amusement Park. "Time on Fire" is about Handler's long, difficult, and painful treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, and his anger at what he saw as the inhumanity of modern medical treatment. Handler joked to "Talk of the Nation" journalist Neal Conan that the ride might have been called "Patients of the Caribbean." Recently, he appeared as "Dave" on ABC's Lost and as staff writer Ricky Tahoe in the series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He currently plays an agent in Californication on Showtime. Handler graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, NY in 1979.
