"I think deep down I've always wanted to be an actor. It was the one thing in school that I was undoubtedly enthusiastic about and good at. I coasted along being good at German, Geography, English and football but there wasn't anything that I could really call my thing, my niche. I would like to be remembered as someone who could make people laugh. I would just like to be remembered really." |

Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan (born 8 December 1976) is an English actor. He has received international attention from the success of playing Merry in Peter Jackson's adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and his role as Charlie Pace on the television show Lost. An attractive performer, Dominic Monaghan broke out of being typecast in teen roles when he landed the role of Hobbit Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck in Peter Jackson's tripartite feature adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkein classic "The Lord of the Rings" (2001-03). Born in Germany to a nurse and a teacher, the diminutive brown-haired, blue-eyed actor spent his formative years in Berlin.
Monaghan was born in Berlin, Germany. At the age of twelve, his family moved from Germany to Heaton Moor in Stockport, England, and later to Manchester. Monaghan's first language is English, but he also speaks German and is well known for his ability to impersonate others and replicate accents. He attended St. Anne's RC High School (where his uncle taught and later became head teacher) and Aquinas College, where he studied English literature, drama and geography. When he was 12 years old, he relocated to Manchester, England with his family and following his completion of secondary school, began acting in local youth theater.
Shortly thereafter, Monaghan was tapped to play Geoffrey Shawcross, the teenage sidekick to a sixtysomething housewife-turned-detective in the BBC series "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates" (1996-98). He went on to play a Russian sailor in the fact-based HBO drama "Hostile Waters" (1997) and a young Frenchman in the four-part British miniseries "Monsignor Renaud" (1999).
Although he had many occupations when he was younger, he always wanted to be an actor. After his second year at Aquinas, he became a regular in school plays such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and Bugsy Malone. Monaghan then went on to join Manchester Youth Theatre where he was scouted for Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. He played Hetty's under-aged sidekick, Geoffrey Shawcross, for four seasons. He made his feature film debut as Russian sailor Sasha in TV film Hostile Waters. Monaghan had been spotted in a play in London and was asked to audition for a role in "The Lord of the Rings". While it took the producers several months to decide, he landed the plum role of the Hobbit named Merry. Shot over two years in 1999 and 2000, the film adaptation was a large gamble for New Line. The studio released the project in three parts over three years, "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001), "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002) and "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003).
Monaghan is an adamant nature lover, and has been active in the planting of trees, cacti, and the pod-seeds of mature hedge-row bushes. He owns a small forest in India, and has worked with the animal rights group PETA. Rather than find himself typecast in subsequent fantasy or period fare, Monaghan headed to Hollywood in search of different roles and was subsequently cast as Charlie, the wanting-to-be-recognized rock drummer among the 48 marooned airline crash survivors on J.J. Abrams' clever adventure drama "Lost" (ABC, 2004-).
Monaghan narrated Ringers: Lord of the Fans, a documentary about Lord of the Rings fandom. On his right arm, he has a tattoo of the Elvish word "nine" written in Quenya-mode Tengwar, a reference to his involvement in the Lord of the Rings and the fact that his character was one of the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. Several other cast members also got similar tattoos during the film's production. On his left arm is a tattoo saying "Living is easy with eyes closed", a line from The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever". He also has two stars tattooed on his left ankle.
Kept a pair of the latex Hobbit feet used in LotR. Monaghan's father gave him The Lord of the Rings book when Dominic was 15, telling him: 'I'll give you six months to read it' - Dominic only took two. Bought a forest in India in early 2003, to help protect the environment. Speaks fluent German. Do Surfs.
Auditioned for Hetty Wainthropp three times in four weeks before finally getting the part. Has a love for insects. His mother, Maureen, is a nurse and his father, Austin, is a teacher. While in Germany Austin taught Science for the British armed forces. Attended Aquinas College, a Catholic sixth form school in Stockport. Did
karate as a child.
Originally auditioned for the role of Frodo Baggins in the LOTR trilogy. In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), in the first scene with Gollum and Bilbo Baggins, Andy Serkis who plays Gollum wasn't on set for the shooting of that scene, so Dominic filled in for him. It was his only interaction on screen with Ian Holm (Bilbo). Has a habit of writing on his hands, which he shares with Chris Martin of Coldplay, who happens to be one of his favorite bands.
Wrote and recorded the vocals for the tracks "Shadow" and "Maybe", and co-wrote and recorded "Half Fling" with Elijah Wood on Viggo Mortensen's album
'Pandemoniumfromamerica'. Used to be roommates with Mackenzie Astin, the brother of his co-star from LOTR, Sean Astin. He now lives on his own in Hollywood Hills. His brother, Matthew, is one year older than him.
Previous jobs before acting included sorting mail at a Post Office, working in British Home Stores and working as a saute chef at a place called Quincey's in Didsbury, Manchester. According to The Toronto Star (December 12, 2003), Monaghan fell so in love with surfing that he moved to Los Angeles and found a place to live 25 minutes from a beach.
Likes Radiohead, Coldplay, The Beatles and The Smiths. While filming the Lord of the Rings-trilogy, he got rid of his fear of heights by joining Orlando Bloom when he went bungee jumping. Owns a leaf-mantis named Gizmo, a Black Widow spider named Witchitar and an albino snake named Blink. Is marginally the tallest of the 4 principal actors to play a hobbit in "The Lord of the Rings" films.
His favorite football club is Manchester United and his favorite players include Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Is a video game fanatic and often hosts gaming parties at his house.
The producers of "Lost" were so impressed with Dom they rewrote the part of Charlie to be a 20-something guy (it was originally intended to be a middle aged rock star who had faded from glory). Shares a birthday with his fellow co-star from the hit series Lost, Ian Somerhalder.
Shares a birthday with Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen. Attended St. Anne's R.C High School in Stockport, England where his uncle has just retired as Headteacher. Of the three British cast members of "Lost", the others being Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Naveen Andrews, he is the only one to play an English character on the show. Ironically, Monaghan is the only one of the three to not have been born in Britain, rather having been born when his parents were working in Berlin, Germany. Originally auditioned for the role of Sawyer on "Lost" before being asked to read for the role of Charlie.
Has been dating his former Lost co-star Evangeline Lilly since 2004. Monaghan resides in Los Angeles, California. He is currently working on a script with LOTR co-star Billy Boyd. Monaghan has been confirmed to have been cast in the X-Men movie spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Barnell Bohusk / Beak.
