"In show business, you get chewed up and spit out. I would work with any one of them again in a heartbeat because it was joyous and incredibly easy. In times of life crisis, whether wild fires or smoldering stress, the first thing I do is go back to basics, am I eating right, am I getting enough sleep, am I getting some physical and mental exercise
everyday." |

Benito Martinez (born June 28, 1971) is an American actor known as police captain (later city councilman) David Aceveda in FX Networks' acclaimed crime drama The Shield. Additionally, he has voiced Coyote Smith in the video game Killer7 as well as a number of characters in the PC game Age of Empires III, and played a criminal on Firefly.
Benito Martinez is most widely recognized as David Aceveda, the character he portrays on the long running hit drama The Shield, winner of the Golden Globe for best drama. As Captain David Aceveda on FX’s gritty police drama “The Shield” (2002 - ), Benito Martinez has brought dimension and inner conflict rarely seen in conventional law enforcement authority figures. Although it’s the role for which he’s best known, Martinez has also branched into movies, most notably a small part in the Oscar-winning “Million Dollar Baby” (2004).
For his work as "David," Benito has received national and international attention, nominated for many acting accolades and has been recognized by the National Council of La Raza, winning the 2007 ALMA Award for best supporting actor as well as being recognized by the NOSOSTROS Foundation and the National Hispanic Media Coalition for outstanding performance in a dramatic series.
Benito received his theatrical training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art's (LAMDA) prestigious three-year program after attending Hollywood High Performing Arts Magnet in Los Angeles. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Benito got his start on stage playing the vihuela in the Mariachi Del Norte de Bennie Martinez, (his father's mariachi) at the age of eight. The next year he also started participating in theatrical productions at La Compania de Teatro de Albuquerque, a bilingual theater company, co-founded by his mother, Margarita Martinez. After many years of doing both, acting won out.
Martinez's film credits include Million Dollar Baby, Saw, New Suit, Kill Your Darlings and Mi Familia, to list a few, with notable small screen appearances on NYPD Blue, Monk, Bones and Numb3rs. His television career began with the traditional route, with bit parts on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (Fox, 1987) and “The X-Files,” (Fox, 1993) leading to bigger roles on “NYPD Blue,” (ABC, 1993), “Once and Again, (ABC, 1999) the acclaimed PBS series “American Family” (2002-2004) and “Karen Cisco” (ABC, 2003). He’s also lent his voice talents to two animated “Scooby Doo” projects. His feature film work has included small parts in “Sunset Grill” (1993), “Outbreak” (1995), and “My Family” (1995). In 2004 he appeared in the popular horror indie film “Saw” and as a rival boxing trainer/manager in director/star Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby.”
He also had a featured role as a boxing manager in the critical and commercial hit film Million Dollar Baby. He was also an extra on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Salazar. Benito trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in Earls Court London England and was in the same class as the actor, Zen Gesner and actress Julie Hesmondhalgh. Martizez's most prominent role remains on the edgy surprise hit “The Shield.”
While police captains often represent grounded authority figures who provide a stern contrast to the leading men or women on a series, Aceveda is as manipulative and secretive as any classical Machiavellian political figure. The part has required Martinez to hold his own against rogue cop Vic Mackey, as played by Emmy-winner Michael Chiklis. And for a controversial plotline where Aceveda is raped and robbed of his dignity, Martinez earned a Golden Eagle Award from Ricardo Montalban’s Nosotros Foundation.
Martinez was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico of Guatemalan ancestry. He holds an advanced certificate in stage combat that he obtained from LAMDA during his studies there.
