"But only if I believe that my directing talents will improve the material I'd be working on. I want to make sure I don't sacrifice beautiful material on the altar of my direction. Often times people complain about the lack of time in television, but I have to say, you don't have any more time to film in feature films then you do in television. It's just a question of how many scenes you'll be doing in the course of a day." |

Andre Braugher (born July 1, 1962) is a two-time Emmy Award-winning American actor. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of fiery detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1998, and again in the 2000 made-for-TV movie. An intense black character player and occasional lead, Andre Braugher gained considerable critical attention for his portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton on the acclaimed series "Homicide" before he left the show to pursue a film acting career. Braugher studied theater at Stanford and later at Juilliard, acting with the New York Shakespeare Festival (NYSF) in plays including "King John" and "The Rehearsal" while attending the latter.
Braugher, the youngest of four children, was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Sally, a postal worker, and Floyd Braugher, a heavy-equipment operator. He went to high school at St. Ignatius College Prep. He graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in theater in 1984; he was originally a pre-med student. Braugher then attended the Juilliard School in New York City, graduating in 1988 where he was acknowledged as the most outstanding theater student at graduation.
Braugher's first film role was in the 1989 Civil War epic Glory as Thomas Searles, a free, educated black from the North who joins the first black regiment in the Union Army. He subsequently moved on to a role on the television series Homicide: Life on the Street as Det. Frank Pembleton, a self-righteous, fiery, unyielding, Jesuit-educated police detective. Playing off of Kyle Secor's Tim Bayliss, Braugher received Television Critics Association awards for individual achievement in drama in 1997 and 1998.
He was nominated for an Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series in 1996 and 1998, winning in the latter year. He left Homicide after its sixth season but returned for the reunion TV movie. He has also starred in the movies City of Angels and Poseidon. In addition to his successful screen career, Braugher has impressed on the stage, the medium he considered most challenging and rewarding. Prior to his onscreen career, Braugher shined in Richard II, Coriolanus and Twelfth Night. In 1997 he earned an OBIE for playing the lead role in "Henry V" in the Public Theater's summer Shakespeare in the Park production.
Back on the small screen, Braugher continued his run as Marcellus Washington, the former partner of a cop turned cabbie (David Morse) on “Hack,” until the show was canceled after the 2004 season. He made an appearance as a judge on an episode of “The Jury” (2004-2005), then returned to regular series work with the critically acclaimed “Thief” (2005- ), playing Nick Atwater, a cool and efficient thief whose high-risk jobs yield big rewards. But at home in New Orleans, Nick has a wife and 14-year-old stepdaughter who know nothing of his other life.
The two worlds eventually collide, leading Nick to struggle to find balance between being a family man and being a thief. The show focused more on character relationships than any particular heist—though there was plenty in the way of tense action—while Braugher earned rave reviews for his performance. Meanwhile, he costarred in the larger-than-life remake, “Poseidon” (2006), playing a ship captain on a capsized ocean liner while a ragtag group of passengers struggle to overcome their differences while trying to escape to safety.
In 1997 he was selected by People as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World." At New York City's Shakespeare in the Park Festival from June 18 to July 14, 1996 at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, Braugher played the title role in Henry V for which he received an Obie award. In 2000, he played the title role as Ben Gideon in the series Gideon's Crossing, which lasted only one season despite good reviews. In 2006, Braugher starred as Nick Atwater in the mini-series Thief for FX Networks, winning a second emmy for his performance. He portrayed General Hager in the 2007 film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Braugher married Ami Brabson, a moderately successful actress in her own right, in 1991. Ami later played Pembleton's wife Mary on Homicide. The couple have three sons: Michael, born in 1992, Isaiah, born in 1997, and John Wesley, born in 2003. They reside in South Orange, New Jersey. Chosen by "People" magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.
For the 1996 Shakespeare in the Park Festival in New York, Braugher played the title role in Shakespeare's Henry V. He performed the role from June 18th to July 14th at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park. Stanford University graduate. Graduated from the Juilliard School. Pulled out of Samuel L. Jackson's role in "Sphere" because he wanted to spend more time with his family. Enjoying the simple life of a "suburban dad" in South Orange, New Jersey. Sons: Michael Braugher (b. 1992) and Isaiah Braugher (b. 1996). Last name is pronounced "brow-wer".
Wife Ami Brabson had a recurring role as Andre's wife Mary on the "Homicide" series. Strong Shakespearean background includes roles in "Coriolanus," "King John," "Measure for Measure", "Richard II" and as Iago in "Othello". He won an Obie Award for his "Henry V" in 1996.
