Alexis Denisof (born February 25, 1966, Salisbury, Maryland) is an American actor who is known for playing Wesley Wyndam-Pryce in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel. He was the fight director for a stage production of Hamlet, and, in 1991 he was the fight director of The Other Side for the BBC, Romeo and Juliet, and The Soul's Dark Night. One of his first known works in television is on the arcade version of the video for "Got My Mind Set On You" by George Harrison. Denisof appeared with Sean Bean in three episodes of Sharpe. He has done many stage productions, including one with Anthony Stewart Head, who played Wesley's predecessor Rupert Giles on Buffy. Denisof's character was first introduced in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season three as Buffy Summers' replacement Watcher. He later showed up in episode 10 of season one of Angel, and was an official main character from episode 11 (effectively replacing Doyle), appearing in 100 out of the 110 episodes of the series. He lived and worked in Britain for a number of years and dated Caroline Aherne (he is given a special thanks in the credits for The Royle Family). When Denisof first arrived in California to begin working in the U.S. he stayed with Ted Danson and his wife Mary Steenburgen for a year. Married to Alyson Hannigan of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997) on October 11, 2003 in California. Attended the exclusive St. Paul's boarding school in New Hampshire. His first film appearance was in the music video for George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set on You." Alexis said he only took the role in order to meet the former Beatle. Lived in London for 13 years before moving back to the United States. When he returned to America, he was too broke to afford his own place and he couldn't find any work. Luckily, Mary Steenburgen, whom he had met and befriended while making Noah's Ark (1999) (TV) took him in, and he lived with Mary and her husband, Ted Danson, for a year. "Ted and Mary are my saviors," he has said. "I definitely wouldn't have made it without their psychological and emotional support." His relationship with Alyson Hannigan was beset with many false starts at first. She asked him out when they first met on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997) set, but he declined, citing a personal rule against dating coworkers. By the time he left the show, she was already dating someone else, but Alexis and Aly became friends regardless, eventually becoming so close that other people assumed they were dating. They finally decided to take the plunge and enter into a genuine romantic relationship, but not without fears that, if it didn't work out, they might wreck their friendship. Suffice to say, the relationship seems to be working very well. The series finale of "Angel" (1999) was his own 100th episode on the show. He attended a boarding school in New Hampshire at the age of 13. Named #3 of the Top Ten Sexiest Men of the Buffy Angel universe in a fan poll by the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanzine (2004). He and wife Alyson Hannigan are godparents to Joss Whedon's son Arden. His mother has a PhD and teaches Drama in Seattle. Was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy just before filming of the final season on Angel commenced. During the first episode, director Joss Whedon was careful to keep most of Alexis's shots on his right profile, as the left side of his face was fairly immobile at the time. Denisof married Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, on October 11, 2003. In 2006, Denisof had a recurring role as Sandy Rivers on Hannigan's series How I Met Your Mother. The couple live in Los Angeles. Three weeks before the filming of Angel's fifth season premiere episode, Denisof was stricken with Bell's palsy, from which he later recovered. Due to the paralysis of one side of his face, scenes were structured as to not showcase the side effects. |
